

Gertrude Duncan, aged 89, died peacefully at home on May 22, 2015 after a brief time in hospice care. She was born on February 17, 1926 in St. David’s, Grenada and was the daughter of Agatha Forte. Gertrude was united in marriage to David Duncan and six children came out of that union (Bernadine Duncan, Julien Duncan, Cynthia Edmiston, Eric Duncan, Valma Russell and Jennifer Sargeant). David preceded her in death in August 1983.
In 1961, Gertrude moved from Grenada to Sheffield, England. She started out working in a factory and decided to go to school to enter the healthcare field. Gertrude worked for many years in nursing homes caring for elderly patients.
In 1979, Gertrude and David moved to the United States with their youngest children (Valma and Jennifer). Upon arrival in the U.S., Gertrude continued her education and became a certified Nursing Assistant. She continued to work in the healthcare field and for many years worked at Sacred Heart Home in Hyattsville, Maryland until she retired in the early 1990’s. Gertrude was a long time parishioner of St. Marks Church in Hyattsville, was a member of the Post Cana group after David succumbed to cancer in 1983. In her spare time, Gertrude loved knitting and reading her prayer books.
Gertrude is survived by her six children, her step daughter, Pamela Joseph, eleven grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and many other relatives and close friends.
There will be a private ceremony at St. Marks Church in Hyattsville, Maryland followed by a final internment at Fort Lincoln Cemetery in Bladensburg, Maryland next to her beloved husband.
