Herma Enderle Lambros

Herma Enderle was born December 25, 1923, in Stuttgart, Germany. She was a school teacher before she came to America in 1949. Herma originally settled in the Chicago area where she had relatives. There she met Kamal Ahub while she was working as a receptionist at the Chicago YWCA. Herma and Kamal moved to the Washington, D.C. area to get married as Kamal had family in this area. Herma's marriage to Kamal did not work out but Herma later met Philip Lambros and they married in 1964. Herma and Philip had a son, Nicholas Alexander Lambros, in 1965.

Before moving to America, Herma survived World War II in Germany, barely missing being killed by Allied bombing, one of which completely destroyed her family home. Fortunately, being a teacher (as her father had also been), and all the teachers and students having been relocated from large cities such as Stuttgart to small country villages, Herma escaped harm when her family home was destroyed by bombing. After the war, Herma's father thought the Russians were going to be very hard on the German civilians and encouraged her to come to America.

Herma's husband, Philip, spoke, read and wrote in several languages and worked translating European books into English at the Library of Congress until he retired in 1982. Philip developed dementia in 1984 and Herma cared for him at home until he passed away in 1989.

In 1991, Herma became a companion of James Hannan. The relationship lasted for the rest of Herma's life. Herma provided babysitting help for Jim's grandchildren, Elizabeth (born in 1995) and Dominic (born in 2001), while their parents were at work. Herma, herself, developed dementia in 2018.

While Herma and Jim were companions from 1991 until she passed at the end of 2023, Jim never knew Herma to be sick with even a cold or the flu, her blood pressure was that of a very healthy teenager and she read the newspaper daily without needing reading glasses.

Herma was a very intelligent and friendly individual, a great companion and will be greatly missed by Jim and his family.
