Hubert Francis Healy Jr., Hugh, died at his home Friday October 18, 2013 from complications of his battle with metastatic malignant melanoma. His wife Linn and his oldest son Sean were both present. His daughter Deidre had recently made several visits home to spend time with him; and his brothers Larry and Jimmy, nephew James and sister Mary had all also recently spent time visiting.
Hubert was born May 28, 1932 in the Village of Ossining, New York the first child of Hubert Francis Healy Sr. and Thelma Mae Dalton. He was the oldest of six children: four brothers Larry, Edward, James, and Joe and one sister Mary. As a child he attended St. Augustine’s Catholic School near Ossining. He graduated from Ossining High School in June of 1950. He became the first member of his family to earn a college degree, earning his Associate of Applied Science in Executive Assisting.
Hubert enlisted in the Army in 1950 and served as a radio operator and company clerk in the Korean War, earning a Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars. He was honorably discharged from active duty in the Army in 1952 but served another three years in the National Guard of New York/Army Reserve. He also later served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. His call to duty to his country and his community continued throughout his life. He served as a Metropolitan Police Officer, in the District of Columbia, for over 18 years. And worked over 16 years as a Security Protective Service Officer with the Central Intelligence Agency. His hard work and dedication to serve and protect earned him numerous commendations, exceptional performance awards, and he was even named Policeman of the Year for the MPD in 1969.
In his youth he, along with brothers Edward and James, worked on the New York Central System as firemen. He took his responsibilities and his sense of duty seriously; however, Hugh was not all work and no play. He enjoyed the outdoors his whole life from hunting and fishing with his brothers and friends as a child to fishing, crabbing, and camping with his own children later on. He played baseball in his youth and enjoyed playing golf as an adult. For several years he had a private pilots license and flew small private aircraft, including trips to take his wife for visits to see her parents.
He met his wife Linnette, who was working as a lifeguard at a pool in his patrol area, in the summer of 1966 while on duty for the MPD. They were married two years later in June. And in 1970 they moved to the home they shared for the next four decades in Upper Marlboro. Their three children Sean, Deidre, and Nathan were raised here. Hugh coached T-ball and Little League for his children and raised them with a silliness and joy that seemed so opposite of his professional personality. He worked hard to support his family and make their dreams come true from cars for teens, to college, and life changing trips overseas. No stranger to travel was he, serving on several overseas assignments, and traveling to his family’s native Ireland to visit and meet relatives more than once. There were family vacations from Maine to Virginia and from New York to the Outer Banks of the Carolinas as well as family reunions as far west as Iowa and Nevada.
He shared a penchant for Bingo with his wife and they played nearly every week at the Moose Lodge where they were both members, and he even called games for a time. He also enjoyed playing poker with friends at the Moose, the VFW, or the American Legion. He was a member of all three of these organizations. He was a parishioner at Trinity Episcopal Church in Upper Marlboro, along with his family, for many years. He is survived by his wife of over 45 years, Linn, his oldest son Sean, his daughter Deidre, his brothers Larry , James and Joe and sister Mary. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Edward and his youngest son Nathan. Memorial services will be held at Trinity on Saturday November 9th at 11.00 a.m.; visitation with the family at 10.00a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center at Georgetown University Hospital Harris Building Suite 4000 3300 Whitehaven Street N.W. Washington, D.C. 20007.
