

Born May 31, 1933 in Hampshire County, West Virginia to Rilla and Edgar T. Pownell. Graduated West Virginia University in 1959, with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Retired from a distinguished career with NASA after 30 years of service. Received NASA’s Exceptional Achievement Medal as well as many additional awards and accolades too numerous to list.
Member of Mt Oak, Methodist Church. Avid wood and metal worker, member of the Annapolis Woodworker’s Guild. Designed and built numerous structures including a large cabin in his native Hampshire County.
Member of the Hampshire County 4-H, spent many summers there helping children learn the sciences by teaching them to build and fly model rockets. Survived by his wife of 59 years, Joyce Pownell and son William Pownell, daughter Cindy Zuella, son in law Tim Zuella and grandson Alexander Zuella.
Viewing will be held at Evans Funeral Home in Bowie, MD on Wednesday February 7th from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8. The funeral will be also held at Evans on Thursday February 8th at 11:00 am. Immediately following the Burial will take place at Mt Oak Cemetery in Bowie MD.
