Mr. Jerome Denis (Pop) Tomasso Sr., Age 93, passed away peacefully on Friday October 3 at Inspired Living Assisted Living, Lakewood Ranch, Fl. with his loving family by his side. His friends knew him as Jerry but his family lovingly referred to him as Pop.
Pop served in the United States Army honorably as Private First Class/Company Clerk at Carswell SAC Air Force Base in Texas where he was awarded the Medal of Good Conduct.
He was born in NYC and his family settled in Elizabeth, NJ where he met and married his first wife Rita Van Blarcom. They had 6 children before Rita passed away from breast cancer in 1975. Pop met Patricia Senor (Mam) and were married in 1978, moved to Watchung, NJ to raise a combined family of 11 Children. They were happily married for over 40 years. Pop worked as a Customer Service Representative for Esso/Exxon corporation for 38 years where he successfully retired.
Pop was a great example of a devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather, family patriarch, provider and a devout Roman Catholic. Mam and Pop served as active members of St Bartholomew RCC and were Eucharistic Ministers bringing the sacraments to the homebound. Pop taught CCD for 35 years at St Bart’s and St Michaels in Elizabeth.
Pop had a great sense of humor and he was able to laugh at himself, which is good because his children often lovingly poked fun at him and teased him on his many “Pop-is-ums”. His compassion and generous character really defined how people viewed him.
Pop was predeceased by his first wife Rita & his second wife Patricia, son Robert (MD) and Jerome D. Jr. Pop is survived by his daughter in-law Sue Tomasso and children Allison, John and Danielle, daughter Donna Thomson, husband Tom and children Erica and Billy, daughter Nancy Weiss, husband Jim and children Suzanne and Christine, son David and wife Sherry and children Kaylie and Delaney, son Rick and wife Robyn and children Nicole and Kristen as well as his 5 step children.
