Born on October 9, 1948, in Chicago, Illinois. He attended Marmion Military Academy in Aurora, Illinois and continued his education at Ball State University, where he met the love of his life, Mary Ann Petrick (Hartmann). Their partnership, which began in college, grew into a lifetime of unwavering devotion, laughter, and family.
Martin and Mary Ann raised their young family in Naperville, IL and in 1988, moved to Florida eventually settling in Lakewood Ranch, where they built a vibrant life centered on family and connection. Throughout life, Martin was deeply committed to his communities. He supported organizations such as the YMCA in Chicago’s Cabrini-Green neighborhood and the Boys and Girls Clubs. He was also an active member of Trinity Preparatory School in Winter Park, Florida, where his three daughters graduated. During his time there, he served on the Board and was President of the Trinity Aquatics Program.
Martin was a constant presence at his grandchildren’s activities, especially youth sports, where he could often be found doing what he loved most—flipping burgers and hot dogs, bringing people together, and creating moments of connection and celebration.
Above all, Martin was a family man. He was an extraordinarily devoted husband to Mary Ann and a proud father to his three daughters: Holly (Hartmann) McGiboney and her husband Rusty of Greensboro, Georgia; Whitney (Hartmann) Peris and her husband Marshal of Waccabuc, New York; and Brooke (Hartmann) Anderson and her husband Stephen of San Anselmo, California.
His greatest joy was his role as “Grandpa and Gramps.” He was incredibly proud of his grandchildren—Sean (25), Grace (23), Tyler (31), and Ansley (26) from Holly; Max (19), Sloan (17), and George (13) from Whitney; and Ivar (11) and Josephine (9) from Brooke. He cherished each of them deeply and was happiest when surrounded by their energy, accomplishments, and laughter.
Whether playing tennis, pickleball, or golf, he embraced every opportunity to stay active and connected. He was naturally social, loved being with people, and had a gift for bringing others together. He lived fully, always put his family first, and never missed a chance to celebrate the moments that mattered most.
Those who knew Martin will remember his constant optimistic outlook, his humor, and his ability to make everyone feel welcome and valued. He created lasting memories not through grand gestures, but through consistency, presence, and genuine care for others.
He will be deeply missed by his beloved family, his many friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know him. His legacy lives on through the lives he touched, the communities he served, and above all, the love he gave so freely.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, May 22, 2026 at 2:00 PM at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church, 12905 SR 70 E., Lakewood Ranch, FL 34202.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Good Sports, a nonprofit company that is dedicated to providing kids sports clothing and equipment to high need communities.
