Passed away peacefully in his 87th year in the early hours Sunday August 16, 2015 with his loving wife Sophie of 15 years by his side at his home under the wise elephant palliative care program. Thanks to the caring nursing staff and CCAC Support. Loving Father of David (Andra), Mark (Sue). Beloved Granddad of Nicholas and Ryan, honorary to many step and foster children.
Doug was born and raised on a farm at four corners of Malton, where now stands the International Centre and long before the airport was built. Doug attended public school in the village of Malton. Mrs. Todd his first teacher and until she passed age 94 sent him a Christmas card every year! Doug attended Port Credit High School, travelled by school bus without a heater in the winter!!
Alas! Farming was not for Doug, he got his first job with Abels Drug Store in the soda fountain days. Mr. Abel encouraged Doug to go to Ontario College of pharmaceuticals and graduated in 1951. Soon after Doug and MaryKay were married in the newly built Trinity United Church at four corners of Malton, where in his youth he was known for his S.S. attendance.
In due time two sons were born David and Mark. Sadly tragedy struck the family when Gramma Perago perished in her home during the gas fire explosion.
Doug had a very active part with the Masons. He joined in 1951 and was a long and respected member of Astra Mount Dennis Lodge #599. Toronto Valley Scottish Rite and sang with the Ramses Shriners Chanters. He also enjoyed weekly fellowship with his Eat and Argue club.
Family was very important to Doug never forgot a birthday or Anniversary, loved to travel the roads and was always planning a trip or cruise. He knew every town large and small in Ontario. Famous for spontaneously deciding to go for coffee in Hamilton or Wasaga Beach with his sons and grandsons.
Doug was well known in the community and remembered the names of everyone he ever met including players in the sports world.
In 2001 Sophie Clark widowed hair dresser in Malton crossed paths with widower Doug Lewis at Tim Hortons. Sparks flew and in 2003 married, moved to a condo in Brampton where Doug lived out his days.
Doug had an exceptional character, kindness, generous personality, unfailing loyalty, and support of others! Everyone who met and knew him always said of him “ He was such a nice person”
