I am not known to those in Em’s life save a select few, but my name is Ashley. I met Em on Twitter on June 8th, 2017 and from there we were best friends- Em became one of the most important people in my life, and is the reason that I am who I am today. It was a natural connection. 
It has taken me months to process this loss as someone who has never experienced grief in this way before. I give my condolences to Herb and Darlene, who Em constantly praised and shared love for, as I cannot imagine how it must feel. 
I think of Em every single day, and nights that we would be talking on the phone have never felt so empty and silent. 
I hope you’re resting in peace, em. You were the brightest, smartest, kindest, and most beautiful soul I have ever known. Thank you so much for getting me through so many difficult times in my life- they seem like nothing now compared to this hurt. 
On what would be your 27th birthday, I am going to get that tattoo we always talked about, and I will donate to the Ontario deaf foundation in your honor.

As I look back at this yes it was a hilarious show of our relationship and her sense of humor. But I also realize she taught me how to have uncomfortable conversations. To validate kids need for knowledge of things that we don’t teach in the classroom. Everyday I answer awkward questions or have extremely uncomfortable adult conversations with teenagers or my own kids. They barely phase me because she made sure I had A LOT of practice. 

Emily is a huge reason I have continued with teaching. When I’m having a rough day she is the first of many students I see in my head. She was my first light bulb moment with a student, the first time I saw the gears all fall into place on a topic or concept. She showed me the high that comes from that moment with a student. So when I’m down, when I’m struggling I remember that smile (she had the best full face smiles) and I remember the hardest days are worth that one brief moment of light. 

Another memory that stands out so loudly in my mind is right before my wedding. After giving me a pep talk on making she Matt “treated me right” in true Emily fashion and humor, she brushed her hair back and showed me these awful long pointy earrings she had put in her ears. Then told me one of them was stuck. And sheepishly asked me if she could wear them with her dress. I of course screamed absolutely NOT. We then spent the rest of our session attempting with pliers to get them unscrewed from her ears. 

She was always giving me a solid reason to laugh. 

Emily will live on in a lot of people. In their memories, their thoughts and the way they see life. 

She always pushed me to be completely in the moment, to be completely myself and to hold on to my sarcasm and humor when times were hard. 

She is a star, though I am sad we have not been in touch regularly, I have been watching her accomplishments on social media. She was destined for amazing things, you brought up a phenomenal daughter that was taken far to soon.



It has taken me all weekend to put the words together to say I’m sorry, To give my condolences and to just come to terms with everything myself. 

This weekend I purchased a wish timber from our local reserve. We had already planned camping but I needed something to mark the importance of Emily and your family in my life. So as I placed the wish timber on the fire I shared stories and memories with my kids and our friends. We took a moment to say things we were grateful for and to remind our kids that they need to dream big dreams and reach for them everyday. 

I haven’t had much time to myself to process all of this not just as the young adult I was when I met her but as a mom of kids myself. I cannot fathom the hurt and anger you are feeling. I hope you know all of those feelings are valid, that grief takes so many forms. I hope you will always stay in touch and reach out if you or the family needs anything. 

I will be coming tomorrow evening to the wake but I know they can be emotionally and mentally exhausting. So I thought I would leave my thoughts and memories of emily here for you guys to see when you feel up to it.

My favorite memory of Emily is the first time I took her to a movie. The opening commercials were for STDs. You may or may not remember them, but the premise was STDs are hard to spell (setting was a spelling bee competition) but easy to catch. This particular one was for  Chlamydia. Which of course lead to Emily asking me super loudly in a public movie theatre what that was. I was mortified, I fumbled on my words as I tried to explain an STD to someone I wasn’t even sure knew what sex was. In child friendly terms, without grossing her out, without making it even more awkward. She saw this as my weak spot and started to ask me super awkward and uncomfortable questions whenever she had the chance.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I’m sure Emily’s memory will live on through the impact they made on the world around them. Emily was an incredible person, positive and overly thoughtful. They will be missed tremendously by all.

I had the privilege of teaching Emily. Emily’s kindness and brilliance always enriched the class.

I love you Emily. I always will. You will always be in my prayers and memories. The time i had with you was so precious. I never expected that we would become the bestest of friends yet we did. You taught me so much about different things. I will always keep you close in my heart. I really really miss you and i do want you back. But I cannot. It hurts but it’ll be alright. I know you would have wanted me to be happy and not sad so ill try and do that for you my baby. I’m listening to the new Taylor Swift album and i know you are listening to it through me. I’ll keep doing things that made you happy so that you keep living through me.
