From the Pease family:

Daughter Linda, son-in-law Steve and grandchildren Cheryl, Chrissy, Brian and Sarah will sorely miss James Frederick Stewart. 

Where else would we hear about how he's looking for a good-looking woman with lots of money or how he has to take his sex pill. 

Every Wednesday at the nursing home was ice cream day which Jim really enjoyed, you could hear him in the hallway saying I SCREAM YOU SCREAM WE ALL SCREAM FOR ICE CREAM over and over again just in case you didn't hear him the first three times. 

At the Scotia bank in Lindsay all the bank tellers will miss him saying, give me a big kiss,  I'm just kidding 

Yes he was embarrassing to be with sometimes especially when he was trying to get a deal or the policeman's discount. But he meant well. 

He was a man who rarely lost his temper or talked disparaging about other people, he tried to help anyone who was in need of a hand.

Jim had charisma, that certain charm that people find irresistible. He would get strangers smiling minutes after they met and they would remember him for it. 

The years to come will be full of stories about Jim when family gets together and we will all remember the big policeman with a kind heart and huge smile.

A poem titled "Slow Dance" read at the celebration of life ceremony yesterday.  This poem really hit home for me and reminds us of all the precious memories we shared with grandpa and all the wonderful things he has taught us over the years.  Thanks for all the great times we all shared with you.

Eulogy  Larry Stewart
Dad was of Scottish heritage, both his parents were born in Scotland and moved to Canada, where Dad was then born. His life was hard and tough. He fought in WW II as a gunner in a Lancaster Bomber which had crashed and he was the only soldier to walk away. 
When the war ended, he became a police officer working in some of the toughest Divisions like 31 and 14 Divisions.
My Dad was a fixer; people in the neighborhood would call him for help, anything from fixing a traffic ticket to helping their kids who got into trouble.  Things were always taken care of and never again spoken about.
A day out for my father was to pick him up at the Retirement home; go to the bank, never take any money out, but always to make a deposit.  I would always ask my dad, do you need some money for spending, NO, I don't need any. As I mentioned, my Dad was Scottish, and when you say Scottish you think thrifty, my dad was thrifty and cheap!
The first trip was to get a haircut, he always had his $10.00 ready in his pocket.  
Of course no tip. I would always thank the barber and shake his hand and slip him a tip as we were leaving.
After the bank, the ritual was to go to the Bulk Barn for at least 10 lbs of Ju Jubes, which he would devour in 2  3 days and Linda or I always got a call shortly after, asking when we were coming back to see him as he was out of Ju Jubes.
Many times when we got to the cashier, he would stumble around trying to find his wallet, which he would never find, or forgot at the Retirement home.
Then off to the Fish and Chips restaurant for lunchlet me treat you guys, Dad would always say.  How much is it he said?  OH MY GOD! Was his reaction.  Again the wallet was never brought out.  In fact I don't ever think I saw his wallet.
Dad's mission was to collect pop tabs towards wheelchairs, so while having lunch he would always make his rounds asking people for their pop can tabs or reaching over their shoulder and taking the tabs himself.  I don't have to tell you how embarrassing this was. Also when the waitress came and said what would you like, Dad's response was always the same.. a kiss and to take you home.
I would take my dad back to the Retirement home and always askDad do you need some money?   as there were always activities and outings at the Retirement home NO, I don't need any money I don't go anywhere, but when I opened my wallet, and hand him some money he always took it.
Well, my sister Linda, my wife Rose and my brother in law Steve decided to have lunch together the other day as we were making these arrangements and Linda said OH Larry, I forgot to tell you that I have Dad's wallet.  
Well Thanks Dad, you finally bought lunch!

In 1957 my parents moved into 549 Beresford Ave. four doors down from the Stewarts at 557 and directly across from the other Stewarts Nanny and Pops, Jim's mother and father. 
From a young age I remember Pops or Jim or both always being around to offer advice to  neighbours regardless of what they were working on. If they were together they could never agree on what the correct advice should be. Whether it was the right way to mow the lawn, cut a hedge straight or hold a hammer. Apparently you can choke a hammer. They were always there with advice and always meant well. Larry may have picked up a few of these traits from his grandfather and father.
When I was very young I got stuck between the seat and the back of a kitchen chair. My mother made several failed attempts to try and get me out. She decided to call Dorothy at Roger 63548 and asked for Jim's help. Jim was a handy guy. A few minutes later Jim showed up with his screw driver, took the chair apart and got me out. 
Sometime later I returned the favour when the keys got locked inside the Stewarts house. The only way in without breaking something was through the milk box. Larry and Jim couldn't decide whether he should be put through feet first or head first. So Jim picked me up and put me through the box head first. The box is kind of over the stairs to the basement and it turned out it would have been better had I landed on my feet.
I remember when Jim was promoted to Sgt. He looked even bigger with those stripes on his arm. One evening Jim came home from 31 division and there were some guys breaking into garages behind the houses. I don't know exactly how I ended up in the car with Jim looking for these guys in the dark lane way but there  I was in the front seat with Sgt. Stewart driving and we were in pursuit of the bad guys. Suddenly he stopped the car and said I think they went in behind that garage. Heres a flashlight go see if they are hiding back there I will wait here in the car. I thought really your like seven feet tall and I'm twelve years old and I'm going to look for them? I guess when you become Sgt. you delegate. Years later I would learn what a good cop Jim was when we worked together at 14 division. During his last years on the job he was in the detective office. He was liked by everyone he worked with even the bad guys because he treated them fairly and with respect and if he could give them a break he would.  
He was always good to me growing up and in the summer he would pick me up after working afternoon shift and we would go up and join the rest of the family. We always had a great time on the way up eating treats and hearing lots of police stories. The cottage was great, boating, fishing, skiing and building a tree house. I was lucky he included me even if it was because Larry had two sisters and no other friends.
Later when Larry and I were older we spent a lot of time with Jim at cottage number two doing a major renovation. One evening Larry and I had a few drinks and Jim never did drink much but I think he enjoyed us throwing popcorn at him. We thought it was fun and he caught most of it. Then he got tired of it and told us we were both nuts and to go to bed. 
I remember when Jim fell at the back of 14 division and broke his foot. The Stewart dog, Skippy was in the yard when Jim came out of the garage with his cast on and crutches. I guess the dog was spooked by this and ran towards Jim barking. Jim  was yelling at him, its me, its me,  stop, its me, but Skippy jumped up and knocked him over. Dorothy heard the commotion and came out and got the dog settled down and  got Jim back on his feet. I was four backyards down and witnessed the whole thing. I never laughed.  
When Larry called me last week to tell me Jim wasn't doing well I went up to Lindsey to see him. On the drive there I thought about some things from the past. Things that happened a long time ago growing up. Bad things that never should have happened. Things I knew were wrong. Things I have never spoke of in almost fifty years. I made my mind up I was going to come clean about these things after keeping quiet about them for so long. I was finally going to tell JIm about the broken piggy bank, his boat going up Noggies Creek and getting the prop ground off on the rocks and water in some, maybe all of Jim's liquor bottles. I don't know what happened to the liquor. When I got to the hospital Jim was sleeping. Larry and Rose wouldn't leave the room so I could try and wake him up and then Linda showed up with three of her kids so I never got to tell Jim who was responsible for these things but I'm  sure he knew, it was Larry.
I have good memories of Jim and I will miss him.

Our condolences to Uncle Jim's family.  I have many fond memories of Uncle Jim when we lived on Coolmine Street with Nanny and Pop Stewart and later when mom and dad purchased property in Peterborough.  Our thoughts are with you at this time of sorrow. JoAnne (Bessie's ) daughter and David Schut.

Sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. We have good memories of Jim and Dorothy during the years you lived on Beresford. There were always a few laughs when Jim would stop by here! Where has the time gone? May he rest in peace.

Our thoughts & prayers go out to the families of Grandpa Stewart during this difficult time. I was lucky enough to have met your grandfather on multiple occasions; enough to know that he was a very loving, caring and funny man; someone that Brian and his sisters definitely looked up to. 

He definitely helped raise some wonderful grand-kids and surely you have all made him equally proud. You will each carry a part of his legacy for the rest of time.

In honour of our grandpa, we sat around the dinner table the other day looking at old photos, eating jujubes and put a puzzle together in honour of his life. As a family. We discussed our memories of him. Thanks for all the wonderful memories grandpa. We love and miss you.

Grandpa,

We are so lucky to have had you in our lives. I will never forget all the memories and jokes. You will be deeply missed and we will all carry you with us in our hearts wherever we go. Every time I drive up north I will remember how every time we passed by the "omeme" sign you would laugh like you are seeing it for the first time and repeat "omeme that's a funny name" then ask me if I had any more snacks (jubejubes and mike n Ike's were your fav). Give a big hug to grandma and we will miss you terribly.

 I'm so sorry for the loss of your Dad. He was a wonderful father to you and for me a terrific father in-law. For one that had to deal with the day to day challenges of being a Toronto Police Officer, your dad was probably the most caring and likeable person I ever knew. I always remember how helpful he would be to anyone, anytime, anywhere - whether it was a total stranger in need or simply to offer a helping hand if I needed help in and around the home.
 In fact, your Dad certainly helped me learn a number of things whether it was how to rough in electrical work during a building project or little tricks he knew on how do things. Naturally, he had his own way of doing things which I had always respected and knew he was passing his experience on. 
 
Your Dad also was the most likeable guy around, I can honestly say I don't know of anyone who can make instant friends on a whim and have people remember him or welcome the site of seeing him again. Always quick to stir up a conversation with a total stranger sitting next to him in the local restaurant or making a cashier put on a smile.

 These are just a couple things that I remember about your Dad and wanted to express - he was one of a kind.

Grandpa was an inspiration to us all, at 95 and 3/4 years he was still so young at heart and had his amazing sense of humour. Grandpa always brought joy to everyone whenever he entered a room. He was always smiling.

"Grandpa, you were the most amazing man to walk on this Earth. Your smile warmed many hearts filling them with joy, your laughter was so contagious and you we're such an inspiration to our family that you left footprints on all of our hearts. I was always the little devil to you and I'll never be able to erase our memories we made together.
I'll never forget the smell of your burnt toast in the morning, the endless hours of doing puzzles together, your cowboy movies playing in the background, the sound of the little mouse running by, licorice and jujube binges, you yelling half way across the store telling us about a sale, myself counting the days until you arrived in Kelowna and you would always surprise me with your car in the driveway by showing up days earlier than expected - you were one of a kind and your soul will never be forgotten.
 
I am so sorry you had to leave us and it hasn't been easy on anyone, but we are so blessed and at peace that you are able to be with your soul mate again - just in time for Valentine's Day! Grandma must be so happy! 

 I love you so much grandpa and thank you for everything you did for all of us, because we are all you in many ways and we are so grateful to have had such an inspirational person in our lives. We will miss you to pieces, but you will remain in our hearts forever!

You always think grandparents live forever. It saddens me that I'm sitting here writing this.

You were such a wonderful grandfather. I would call you and the first thing you'd say was "Hey kiddo, how are ya?" And our conversations would always end with an "I love you". The only thing that makes this any easier, is that after all these years you'll now be with grandma. I'm sure she was waiting at the gates for you. Maybe even holding a bag of Jube Jubes and All Sorts for you:) Give her a hug for me. I will miss you deeply.

James Stewart - A wonderful Dad, Grandfather, Great Grandfather - such a wonderful man who was always so thoughtful of others and who brought a moment of happiness to everyone he touched, he had such a kind heart and about as genuine a person one could ever be. 

You could never go places without Dad engaging with total strangers no matter where you were and making their day just a little brighter. A person would suddenly open up and have a discussion with Dad and later walk away feeling they just made a friend - so many people were touched by his character and kindness.

We are so proud to have a Dad, a grandfather, a Great Grandfather such as he who did make our days together a wonderful memory to remember.

We Love you very much and will miss you always. Always thinking of you and you will be in our hearts forever.

Grandpa,

I miss your laugh already.  You were so kind and always made everyone smile and laugh around you. I think of you everytime I smell burnt toast, remembering you in the mornings making burnt toast and tea. I find myself telling my kids  We're having a party!. I tell them Grandpa always told me he was going to see a man about a dog and who can forget about the mouse in the wall. When he lived with us I would visit him downstairs and he would give me candy, cookies and a can of Pepsi. Everytime I would call him he always ended the conversation with I Love you, Dear
