I have been waiting since march to find the right words to say about the loss of my friend.

today i put on the shirt i wore to his funeral and realized i never washed it, just tucked it away. It still had the purple lint from the scarf i wore to his services and for weeks after he passed. my mourning scarf.

i folded up the lint roller sheet after i removed it all and slipped it into my wallet where it will remain. adding to the purple ribbon i have pinned to the roof of my car. and the show programs with his signature in them. and the show sweaters that match his.

in addition to doing theatre together, he was one of the first people i ever met that was like me.

khalen, i miss you so much and i will continue to miss you as long as i continue to do theatre---forever. i hope you're watching from wherever you are. i hope you like it. i hope you know how special you are to me and all of us.

I was devastated to hear of Khalen's passing. Our paths crossed at a coffee shop he worked at. He always had a smile, a kind or funny word to say, and he lit up every single room or space he was in. He was theatrical and hilarious and incisive. I was a regular at that coffee shop for many months, but then moved away from the area... so I actually didn't hear about this until just a few moments ago. I'm so sorry to hear he is gone! He really had a positive impact on many people - even people he happened to meet in the context of his role as a barista. The world is a less rich place now that he is gone </3 My heartfelt condolences to you, his cherished and loved ones who knew him best.

I didn't know Khalen on a personal level but I knew him as my favorite batista.
The batista that would dance around as he completed orders, would blast theater music, sing, and laugh, full energy at 8 in the morning.
I've been going to this cafe since the beginning of my grade 11 year.
I would walk in, and most mornings, he was there, singing and dancing as per usual. He would instantly put a smile on my face and make my day 100x better without even knowing.
Today I walked in for the first time since February. I went in like usual, expecting to see him, but he wasn't there. I thought maybe he was off today. After I ordered, I saw the memorial signs and it immediately hit me hard. 
Though I never knew him personally, he was the light in the room. He will be greatly missed by many.

I walked into Black Horse near Dupont,  a place where I used to feel comfortable working for hours.. I hadn’t been in a while, but everything looked just the same. Familiar. Comfortable. As I waited for my coffee, I heard someone singing, and for a moment, everything felt normal again. That voice—I recognized it instantly. It was Khalen. He used to sing around the café all the time, just doing his thing, turning ordinary moments into something warmer, something brighter. His voice was so unique, so full of life. I smiled without thinking, expecting to see him behind the counter or somewhere at café like always.

But then I noticed the memorial sign.

And just like that, something shifted. It was like his voice had been echoing one last time, a memory looping in the walls of the place he lit up. I stood there, caught between past and present, hearing him sing like he always did—it was so vivid. 

I wasn’t a friend, not even someone he really knew.  I'm just a stranger. I didn’t know him personally, but his presence left an imprint on me. And I hope—wherever he is—he’s still singing. Still doing for others what he did for me: making the world feel just a little more beautiful, one song at a time.

I didn’t really know Khalen, but he worked at my favourite cafe. I wanted to write something because I so enjoyed seeing him in the mornings. He got me to buy my first pair of crocs and to wear them with wooly socks. He also introduced me to some of my favourite snacks and sandwiches. It might sound trivial, but those interactions and his sweet disposition left an impact on me. I was so sad to hear about his passing. I will always remember his colourful fashion and big, gregarious presence. 

I’m wishing his family peace and strength during this time. What a blessing he was to the people he met - even briefly.

So proud to help him as we sent him off to school and helped him to move into his first apartment. He was so happy that day!!!

The visitation was...and some...
I along with many, many other persons, gathered at the Andrews Community Funeral Centre last evening for the Visitation of our beloved Khalen.  Amid the tears and obvious state of disbelief, the reality was evident that our friend was laying there in a casket - silent.

But, the ambiance, music, colors, the people, the warmth from hugs; altogether made our visit bearable.  They had his costumes on display - a very personal touch. Khalen's mom was amazing and kind. The staff was accommodating, pleasant and helpful. We felt comfortable in a strange place, despite the sadness and reason for us being there.

Many of us were fearful to even go up to the casket, but, there was this one black lady who helped  us along the way.  She was a 'trip' - very helpful and spoke words of comfort. From all of US, thank you Miss.  We loved her words of encouragement at the end...she reminded us that we had 2 more sleeps until the day. The 'this is it' day when we say our final goodbye and see his face.

Everything was beautiful and our friend Khalen 'slayed' hair, makeup, lips, clothes.

My dear Khalen. I can’t believe this to be real. I will never be prepared to say goodbye. 

Your love that you left with me is forever. Although your body has retired your soul, energy and love has stained my heart and will forever live with me. Our friendship is eternal. My forever family. 

You were so young, freshly 23. I’ve known you since we were 14; 9 years together. I’ve seen how much you’ve grown into the wonderful person you were. I’ve seen how happy you became once you started living in your purpose. I’ve seen the light you left with every single person you interacted with. When you were around it was always jokes, laughs and good vibes. Even as kids your spirit and sense of self was as strong as ever. No one can tell you nothing! &Yes your mouth was smart lol but you were the SWEETEST most absolutely sweetest soul ready to buss a joke and smile.  

You were art personified! At the young age of 23 you were already touring, travelling the world sharing your art, performing on big stages, Wining awards, Making a name for yourself, dancing with legends and singing with that lovely voice of yours. Your presence was known!! I loved seeing you flourish and win! Seeing you perform always brought me to tears. I’m so grateful that I was able to witness such drive and talent in a person. I was honoured by your love to be your friend and witness such growth to success from since we were kids. @14 we said YUP DATS FAM and never left. 9 years later we still tight. My Forever family truly. Although We didn’t get to see each other much in our adult years the love was always the same.

I was supposed to dance with you some more. You know? Be on big stages with you, have you debut me, hear you say “YES MEL” and make you proud. You pushed me to dance.  You brought safe spaces and opportunities to me and always spoke life into my movement. That meant so much to me. You wanted to see me win as I did you. Thank you for everything K.

Dear Corine,  we are so sorry to hear of Khalen's passing.  This is an unimaginable  time of grief.  His time with us was short, but his impact was immeasurable. Hoping you will find peace in the beautiful memories you created together as a family. 🙏

I have nothing but fond memories of Khalen Moodie. He was truly a bright light. I can’t recall a time when I wasn’t greeted by Khalen with his radiant smile and warm embrace that always made me feel loved.  Watching him grow has been such a pleasure.

I am deeply saddened by this loss, and his essence will be cherished always.

Coreen, my heart goes out to you, Momma. Thank you for letting us share in the love he gave so freely.

Rest Easy Khalen Moodie - Powell

Almost a year after meeting Khalen, we were at a ball when he gave someone who was giving me a hard time walked by and he sized that individual up and down and gave them a STANK face. That was when I realized he was my friend because that person didn’t do anything to him but he was still down to ride out for me. That was also the day he told me about Rent auditions and next thing you know were missioning to Brampton 3 times a week to be strippers. This video is a rehearsal of the pre-show we did, he vogued for a minute straight because the director had stars in his eyes and forgot to tell him to stop. Doing Rent was where I got to know Khalen and not just Kuriosity and I’ll never take that for granted🙏🏽💙🙏🏽

I had the pleasure of directing Kahlen in Camp Rock The Musical when he was a grade 11 student (vocal major) at St. Roch. I remember his huge smile, talent and kindness. RIP Khalen 🙏♥️

Rest in Peace Khalen...gone but surely won't be forgotten.  Sincerest condolences to Coreen and the grieving family and friends. Life is the ultimate position, let's cherish it as we contemplate our memories with Khalen and his family.  Peace and ❤️🙏🏼

My name is Nadya Reggio and I went to high school with Khalen. I was younger than he was and I really struggled in high school, but from the moment I met him he made me feel so welcomed. His presence and energy was so comforting. The first time I ever saw him perform was during the high school production of Camp Rock, I got to work backstage and witness his magic. Our paths crossed again as I ended up working at the Rose Theatre and I was lucky enough to be scheduled for at least two of each of his shows. Every time I would see him on that stage I was filled with such emotion, I would tear up and get goosebumps watching him perform and give it his all. He would always come up to me after his shows to say hi, give me a big hug, and I would always tell him how amazing he was. Khalen was larger than life. I’m so thankful for the people who raised him and made him who he was. He was a beautiful soul and always will be.

Acting a fool just because. literally any time I pulled up my camera, he was right there to photobomb me. I couldn’t take one selfie without him, jumping up in front of my camera and blocking my whole vision. And now my photos feel empty because he brought such spontaneousness,  he brought laughter. in these photos, I will always remember how much joy he brought me whenever he did photo bomb because he made me feel important, she made me feel seen.

My deepest condolences. May the fond memories of Khalen bring comfort in this time of sorrow. He was a beautiful, talented, kind soul who will be greatly missed. He is our Guardian Angel now, watching over us from Heaven. Rest In Peace, Khalen. Forever in our hearts.

I met Khalen while working at Firehouse Subs. Funny enough, the day we were supposed to work together, he quit, but still showed up, complaining about our manager. That was the day our friendship started.

Even though we never actually worked a shift together, Khalen would still come by during his breaks, sometimes to grab food, sometimes just to sit in the dining room, sing to us, and make everyone laugh. I remember the first time he made me try chili cheese fries. He walked in with fries from Burger Priest, asked me to steam some cheese and grab some chili, and after that day, I was hooked.

Khalen was a beautiful soul, always full of joy, always listening. He’d let me ramble about boys and then remind me how ugly they were, always with a straight face, before asking if I really wanted ugly kids. Every single memory I have of him is filled with laughter.

Even though we only knew each other for a few years, he made a huge impact on my life. He taught me that it’s okay to just be myself, because who cares what anyone else thinks?

I’ll miss Khalen so much, his laugh, his smile, his singing. But I’ll carry his joy with me always.

I am here to offer my most sincere condolences to you in this time. My name is Amanda Drakopoulos and I attended McCrimmon middle school with Khalen from 2013-2016. From the time I met him, Khalen was a bright light whose laughter could bring life to any room. He was loyal to a fault and I saw this about him right away. I remember anytime something went wrong or a situation arose, Khalen was always there to listen. On top of all of this, he was a very talented singer and performer. I immediately noticed this when we had band together, as he would belt out show tunes, taking breaks in between to play his trumpet. While we attended separate high schools, I recall Khalen constantly waving to me when I was driven home. One time, he even started chasing my mom’s car to make sure that I noticed how happy he was to see me. And I noticed, so much so that I continue to think of this moment with a smile on my face. His presence was one that you encounter once in a lifetime, and at 23 years of age, Khalen most certainly left his mark. I will forever miss you, my friend. Have fun in heaven, where I’m sure your talents are being put to great use. To Khalen’s family and close friends: May the comfort of Jesus envelop you in these hard times.

I met Khalen when I was barely walking & talking. My early childhood consists of a million memories with him, spending almost every day together.  Day after day,  he was someone to be excited about seeing. He lit up every room he walked into, and he will be deeply missed.

Khalen and I were singing together at church. my favourite duet partner❤️

I met Khalen when we did Beauty and the Beast. I was new and he made me feel so welcome. He and and another cast member would run up with hugs everytime they saw me and I’d feel so happy. Those amazing hugs continued over the years! I got to watch him grow in talent and skill over the years and had the privilege to do some other shows with him. When I saw him in Rent and Kinky Boots, he took my breath away. I was so proud. He truly was a ray of sunshine.

I met him at a party with his best friend Quell and honestly he was hilarious and one of the only people I remember and still talk to past my crazy party years. He was a creative soul and an amazing man and he will be missed, fly high brother, you will be missed.
