After a brave and gallant battle with Alzheimer’s, Thomas (Tom) Mill passed away on Wednesday, March 20, 2013. Predeceased by his beloved wife of 51 years, Elspeth (Elsie) Mill and survived by his sister May and loving children Thomas Jr. and wife Vennie, Aileen and husband Yves, and Tracey. Greatly missed by his six grandchildren, Janine, Julie, Clayton, Allison, Daniel and Alec; and his three great-grandchildren, Colin, Leah and Juliana. He will be fondly remembered by many.
Born on August 21, 1926 in Ferry-Port-on-Craig, Tayport, in the County of Fife, Scotland, Tom studied carpentry at Dundee Technical College and became an accomplished Master Carpenter. There was never a job that was too big or too small for Tom and even the most challenging construction jobs were done to perfection.
Tom and his brother Jim cycled all over Scotland and frequented the dancing halls. On March 14, 1953, he married Elsie and together they formed a life together for over 50 years. In 1960, Tom and Elsie, Tommy and Aileen immigrated to Canada. His family was completed 7 years later with the arrival of Tracey.
Tom was a family man. He was fiercely proud of his family and deeply involved in all of their accomplishments. If there was a school play, soccer game, horse competition or graduation Tom was surely to be there to support and honour his children or grandchildren.
Tom was a great friend. If there was a job that needed done or helping hand required Tom was the first to step forward. He thought nothing of working hard all day, then travelling to Acton or Aurora to help out his in-laws on the farm, or refinishing someone’s basement, or building his children desks and bookcases.
Tom fought for the ‘working man’. He was a staunch supporter of the labour movement and active in his union including the retirement club where he organized bowling, trips and yard sales.
In all, Tom was a proud, loyal and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. Knowing Tom has made us all a little richer. He will be remembered with love.
