Dorothy Mae Bloomer passed away peacefully amongst loving family in her home in Riverview, Florida on September 19, 2023, at the age of 94. Dorothy had been a resident of Riverview since September 11, 2001, and formerly resided in Dearborn, Michigan, Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Richmond, Howell, Flint, Davison, and Hale, Michigan. Dorothy, the youngest of four siblings, was born on February 23, 1929, in Detroit, Michigan to Francis and Sophie Rutkowski. Dorothy met her husband and best friend, Royce G. Bloomer, while attending Michigan State Normal College in Ypsilanti, Michigan where she was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree for Education in 1950. She was also awarded an Associate in Arts degree from Dearborn Junior College in 1948, and a Diploma from Fordson High School in 1946. While raising three children of her own, Dorothy taught elementary school children for 20 years in the Flint schools of the Genesee Intermediate School District. By the time of her retirement in 1985, she had taught over six hundred children how to love as they learned. Her guidance and teachings provided four generations of education and love just in one family alone. Dorothy’s entire life revolved around her family, friends, and community. She was well known for her artistic and musical talents and her love of life will flow through us for many generations to come. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sisters Wanda and Jane, and brother Hank. She is survived by her three children and their spouses: Richard and Debra Bloomer of Riverview, Florida, William Bloomer of Killeen, Texas, and Nancy and Jeff Cohen of Houston, Texas. She was also proud to have seven grandchildren: Kaylin (Bloomer) Moser and Richard Bloomer Jr; Eric, William, and Michael Bloomer; and Rachel (Cohen) Baum and Aaron Cohen. She also was blessed with two great grandchildren: Annabelle Grace Moser and Myles Baum. Dorothy will be remembered as a loving mother who put family first and showed loved ones how to thrive and glow as they grow.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Dorothy Bloomer’s name to a charity of the well-wisher’s choice, such as a local Animal Shelter, local Teacher’s Support organization (classroom supplies, etc.) or local Hospice.
