Born in Jefferson Township, Scioto County, Ohio, Johnny lived a life marked by devotion to faith, family, and hard work. He was a proud member of Landmark Baptist Church and served his church community faithfully for many years, both in service and in spirit.
Johnny was a union crane operator from August 31, 1956, until his retirement on November 1, 1993. He was known for his strong work ethic, his skilled hands, and his generous heart. After retiring, he continued to give his time and talents to those around him, especially through volunteer work with his church.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 71 years, Lorena Hampton, with whom he shared a lifetime of love, laughter, and yard sales—one of their favorite pastimes together. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Joey Hampton (Shannon), Vanessa Chevillot (John), Amy Gregory (Ryan), Lee Cofield (Angela), and Jessica Heard (Ron); 12 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him great joy and pride.
Johnny was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Ilde Hampton, his children Shelia Sue Cofield, Joey Nelson Hampton, and Johnny Wayne Hampton, as well as his sisters Joyce, Mable, Violet, Freda, and Mary Elizabeth.
He was a devoted Christian, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, and a cherished friend to many. He loved woodworking, time spent with family, and the simple pleasures of life. His faith was unwavering, and his legacy of love and integrity will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
As Ernest Hemingway once wrote, “Every man’s life ends the same way. It is only in the details of how he lived and how he died that distinguish one man from another.” Johnny lived a life rich in the details that truly matter.
A Celebration of Life for Johnny will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, October 9, 2025 at Landmark Baptist Church, 6021 Williams Road, Seffner, Florida. Interment to follow in Limona Cemetery, 1698 Limona Road, Brandon, Florida. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church.
