Luke was born on October 3rd, 1941, to Nina Flowers and Luther Potter in Wilmington, NC. After graduating from high school, he went on to graduate North Carolina State in 1966 with a BA in English, continued his education at Boston College in 1972 with graduate hours in International Relation and in 1977 received his master’s in political science from Appalachian State.
Luke was in ROTC for 3 years in high school and started his military career in 1966 when he joined the US Army. This kicked off 26 years of service including Vietnam and Desert Storm for Col. Luther Potter who retired in 1993.
In 1965, he met Brent Barwick, they wed 6 months later and were together 59 years. Survived is their son Lee (Susan), daughter Brena (Tony) and 5 grandchildren Anthony (Daniela), Ian (Alley), Sam, Lila and Gabriella.
Luke was predeceased by a brother and sister Norman and Delores and is survived by two sisters Joyce and Allegra.
After retiring Luke liked to spend his time with family, hunting, fishing and reading.
