Marilyn Joy Carson, a much loved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, went home to be with her Lord on January 17, 2026, at the age of 92. Born in Tampa, Florida, to Winton and Muriel Michelle, Joy’s life was distinguished by her unwavering commitment to faith, family, and education.
She is survived by her devoted children: Janet (Jim) Drake, Denise (Steve) Tucker, and Kevin (Leigh) Carson. Her legacy continues through her eight grandchildren—Chris, Robin, Katelynn, Kindle, Lauren, Kyle, Eric, and Lindsey—and ten great-grandchildren.
In 1951, Joy eloped with her beloved husband, Ralph Lloyd Carson. With his steadfast encouragement and support, she graduated with the charter class of the University of South Florida in 1963 and subsequently earned a Master’s Degree in Education. Joy dedicated three decades to the field of education as a Reading Specialist and Middle School Language Arts teacher in Hillsborough County, where she influenced and inspired generations of students.
A woman of profound faith, Joy was a devoted member of both Belmont Baptist Church and Idlewild Baptist Church, where she served faithfully in both Children’s and Adult Ministries. She taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and led children to the Lord for over forty years.
Upon retirement, Joy and Lloyd traveled extensively around the world, embracing the joys of discovery and companionship. She will be remembered for her resolute spirit, independence, warmth, and generosity. Her enduring influence and exemplary character remain a source of inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing her.
