

On December 17th, 2023, at the age of 84 years old, João passed peacefully at the Stedman Community Hospice surrounded by his loving family.
Cherished husband of more than 58 years to his loving wife, Maria Isabel. Devoted father of Olga, Lucia, Joseph (Laura), Christopher (Katie). Loving Vavô of grandchildren Taylor (Alex), Nicole (Alex), Brett (Stephanie), Matthew (Natasha), Erin, Celina, and Arlo, and great-granddaughter Scarlett. Predeceased by his parents Jose Carvalho and Maria Moniz, Andre Carvalho (brother) and Emila. He will also be missed by his brother Jose (Marta), Maria dos Anjos (Adelino), Ermelinda. He is survived by his sisters-in-law, Maria, Conceição, and Natalia, as well as many nephews and nieces.
João was born in Maia, São Miguel, Portugal and immigrated to Canada in 1969. He built a beautiful life for his family and loved his incredible garden, especially his fava beans and his hobby farm with several chickens, rabbits, and pigeons. João worked as a construction worker, who was known for “laying all the pipes in Brantford” until he retired in 2001. He was a kind and generous man who opened his home to family and friends with an abundance of food and wine. João was always there to help others with pruning grape vines and planting vegetables. He enjoyed spending his retired years with his grandchildren.
The family will be receiving guests at Thorpe Brothers Funeral home on Thursday, December 21st at 2pm – 4pm, and again at 6pm-8pm. A memorial mass will be held at St. Pius X Catholic Church on Friday, December 22nd at 10am, followed by an interment at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. A Reception will be held following the service at St. Pius X Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in João’s name to Stedman Community Hospice.
