Benita was born on November 11, 1938 in Boise, Idaho to Juan Jose “Joe” and Flora Mae (Gaviola) Berrojalbis. As the third daughter born to Joe and Flora, she was the perfect completion to the Berrojalbis trio.
Benita grew up on her parents’ cattle and feedlot operation in Notus, Idaho. She learned early the importance of hard work and responsibility and this important trait carried throughout her entire life.
She went to school in Notus from first through twelfth grade and graduated in 1956. Benita’s magnetic and fun personality allowed her to make friends easily. She was involved in sports and school activities and excelled at basketball.
In 1958 Benita and her long time friend Carol Eagan Thrush decided to go to Seattle and both got jobs at Boeing. Benita worked for Boeing for almost a year and decided to move back to Idaho, where she immediately got a job at First Federal in Caldwell.
Prior to her move back to Idaho she met her future husband (unknown to her at that time) George A. Post at the Spanish Castle in Seattle where they would go on weekends to dance and have fun.
Benita dated George a few times before leaving for Idaho to start her new job at First Federal where she stayed almost a year before returning to Seattle and Boeing. She somehow got reacquainted with George and the rest is history. They got married in February 1963 in Seattle.
George’s employment with Interstate Electronics moved them to Virginia, California and eventually back to Washington. Benita wasted no time and had a job within a few days of settling into her new home because her topnotch skills as a paralegal/legal secretary ensured employment. This was a hallmark of her entire professional career.
It was during these years that Benita and George welcomed their only child, Gregory George Post. He was the light of their lives. Benita’s beautiful smile seemed even brighter after the birth of Greg. Her face lit up when she told stories about his cute little antics. He had just the right amount of orneriness…and she liked that.
In the early 70s, George’s work took him to Rota, Spain. They took this opportunity to take her parents to the Basque Country. Together the five of them traveled to the birthplace of her father. Seeing the farm where her father was born, meeting his brother and other family members, visiting with her mother’s family, and seeing firsthand this part of the world from where her father had immigrated as a young man so many years before, left an indelible impression.
Benita worked part-time during Greg’s early years, but once he was in school she returned to her full time profession as a Paralegal/legal secretary. She worked for a time at James Monroe Law Office, in Bremerton, but the majority of her career, more than thirty years, was spent with Public Defenders Crawford, McGilliard, Peterson, Yelish and Dixon, in Port Orchard where she was the office manager. She enjoyed this job immensely and in turn was well respected by staff, attorneys and judges.
She loved all outdoor activities and was an avid walker spending many lunch hours walking the streets of Port Orchard alone or with a friend. She rarely missed a day. The family also snow skied and water skied. Benita, George and Greg loved to share their cabin at Mason Lake with family and friends. When George pulled a young skier up for the first time; it was always a thrill. Greg and his buddies have cherished memories of those great times.
Retirement years offered new adventures for Benita and George. They enjoyed a couple of cruises with friends, pickup and camper trips to Homer, Alaska, and driving their motor home south to Arizona for as many years as they were able. They made many new friends and treasured these memories. Benita had a life well lived.
Benita is survived by her husband, George; son, Greg (Lynae); granddaughters, Kaylee (Steven) Worley; Addison Faith Post; and great-granddaughter, Murphy Jean Worley; as well as her sister, Alice Hamblin; and many nieces and nephews.
Benita was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Dolores Asumendi.
Visitation is scheduled for Friday, March 15, 2024 at 12:00 pm at Miller Woodlawn Funeral Home.
