Harold was born to Jules Harold Tassin and Helen Davis Tassin in 1930 in DesMoines Iowa. A young family trying to survive during the Great Depression he lived at first with his grandparents while his parents traveled the country for odd job work and both parents were national Marathon Dancers.
At 6 his dad found work at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard as the Tassin’s settled in old town Silverdale around 1938. Harold went to Silverdale elementary school where unbeknownst to him his future bride, Margaret (Micky) Mundy also attended.
During WWII Harold’s family found a home closer to the PSNS on 15th and Naval while he attended junior high at Coontz. At that time Bremerton was fully engulfed by the war efforts including blimps over Bremerton, air raid sirens were installed all over town, nightly blackouts and food stamps were enforced.
During high school years Harold was an airplane enthusiast and was secretary for the Kitsap Prop Spinners where he medaled in numerous air events wowing spectators with his hand made motorized planes flying within 2 feet from the ground, executing wing overs and steep vertical climbs. One of his hand built gliders was launched at Lebo field in Bremerton and found in Clair’s marsh by the property owner and called the phone number that was on the wings of the plane. Today Clair’s Marsh is the intersection of Wheaton Way and Riddell Road.
Harold and Micky were in choir together when they started dating. Harold graduated in 1949 then he and Micky married on August 22 1949.
The newlyweds first residence was Tent City were Harold and his dad both worked on the Grand Coulee Dam and later several odd jobs at Milt’s Doughnuts, Romin’s Tackle shop and fiber glassing boats in Bremerton, then eventually an entry position at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
In the 1950’s Harold and Micky had five children from 1950 through 1957, Rick, Jeff, Lynda, Jerry and Tony.
In the 1960’s Harold, ever the tinkerer, focused on Go Cart racing even attending National events and being featured in Carting World magazine. Harold, Micky and Rick all won carting trophies. Harold and business partner Ted Dupee opened a small engine and go cart clinic in Gorst named Cycle City and by 1967 sold it to Cliff Schoening who later moved to new locations.
In the later 1960’s and 70’s Harold’s focus turned to electronics where he built numerous Heathkit televisions and stereo system gear. He also loved hiking, fly fishing and tying his own gear. Harold recorded numerous family musical endeavors in his front room including the first record album for Rick and Jeff’s musical group JARAT.
Harold retired from the PSNS in 1985 after which Mick and Harold traveled throughout the Pacific Northwest and Canada in their RV fishing, hiking and stunt kite flying at the ocean. He would spend the entire day on the beach with his stunt kites flying within 2 feet from the ground, executing wing overs and steep vertical climbs again for Micky who would set up 50-some whirligigs for passersby, sketching and watching Harold fly.
Harold (Pappa T) is preceded in death June 2020 by his bride of 70 years Micky (Momma T) and his granddaughter Amy Kristine Larson in 2018.
