After graduating from a school in Glennfield, North Dakota, that housed all 12 grades, Inez worked all summer for another family to earn her tuition to nursing school in Minneapolis, Minnesota. When her pay check bounced, Inez’s father sold his prized pig to pay for it. She did so well in nursing school that she was able to take the state boards early and then, while working as a nurse during the night, she taught classes to new nurses during the day.
On November 16, 1942, Inez married Paulmer J. Slind, who was her partner for 60 years. While Paulmer was in the Philippines, during World War II, Inez was offered the opportunity to become a nurse anaesthetist, if she would commit to staying at the hospital. But she and her friend saw an ad for a hospital in Bremerton, Washington that offered higher salaries. She and her friends moved to Bremerton and Paulmer joined her after the war. They made their first home there. Inez later worked for Dr. Foster in his office on Callow Avenue.
At age 26, after the birth of her son, Inez was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had a radical mastectomy and was given six months to live. Her doctor told her to set a goal a few days away and when she reached that goal, set another one. She continued to do this for the next seventy years.
Inez, Paulmer and their two children moved to Lakewood and lived there for four years before relocating to Poulsbo. There, Inez became a meat wrapper for her husband’s butcher shop. They worked together until they retired in 1970.
Inez enjoyed gardening, playing pinochle and other card games with friends and family, and was a life time member of Sons of Norway, Lodge #44 of Poulsbo.
Inez is preceded in death by her five brothers: Norman, Ervin, Clarence, Wilfred Papenfuss and Gerald Pappen; her husband Paulmer J. Slind; son, Arvid E. Slind and granddaughter, Mackenzie C. Albro. She is survived by her two sisters: Elsie Hoffman of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Elaine Felt of Edmonds, WA; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her daughter Diane Albro (Brad) of Poulsbo, and grandchildren: Leonard Albro of Port Orchard, Wendi Albro (Liam Duffy) of Portland, OR, and Hilarie LaBerge (Arron Phillips) of Kingston; and a great granddaughter, Mackenzie Dahlhauser of Seabeck.
In Lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the Poulsbo Fire Department, or the American Cancer Society.
Per Inez’s request, there will be no memorial service, but a potluck will be held to remember her by, at the family home, for friends and family on Saturday, March 25, from 2-6 PM.
