A proud Navy veteran of 20 years, retired as a Dental Technician Chief Petty Officer (DTC), departed this life on May 11, 2024. Tommy was born October 15, 1941, in Cassville, MO, to James Marion and Alma Lebow Gwaltney. He was a graduate of Crane High School where he established many lifelong friendships. He joined the Navy in 1958 at the age of 17. The highlight of his naval career was two tours of duty in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba during the Bay of Pigs controversy. His career also included service onboard USS Bennington, USS Juneau, USS New Jersey and he completed a tour of duty in Vietnam. While serving, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Education from Southern Illinois University.
Tom had a varied post-Navy career in Santa Clara County, CA working at Westinghouse, Calma, Boeing Aerospace, and Lockheed Martin as a Technical Trainer Specialist. Many of the individuals he taught during these years played a direct role in advancing space exploration. Ready for the good life, he ultimately retired to Kitsap County, WA, an area rich in naval history.
Of all his accomplishments, his greatest joy and most beloved titles were Dad and Grandpa. He loved his computer-time, Looney Toons, golf and the television show NCIS. He was a man of faith and gave his time and resources to help others. He is remembered as a kind and gentle man with a friendly smile and a mischievous sense of humor.
Tom is survived by his wife Sandra; his children: Doug Gwaltney (Steve), Alan Shaffer (Sandra), and Julie Smoley (Brian); his five grandchildren: Ashley, Sam, Jonathan, Michael and Allison; his sister Norma Cope (Bob); and many extended family members in and around southwest Missouri.
Tom was a bright light, dear friend, and protector of his loved ones. He will be missed dearly. Internment with full military honors at Tahoma National Cemetery for family will be scheduled on a future date. Those who wish to remember Tommy can make a donation in his memory to the Veterans of Foreign Wars (vfw.org) or the U.S. Navy Memorial (navymemorial.org)
I will miss you my love.
