Barbara Marie Queen-Ferguson was born in Silver Spring, Maryland on Monday December 4, 1961. Barbie was raised in Edmonston, Maryland and was the youngest of 6 children belonging to James Carroll Queen Sr. and Mary Frances Queen. As a child Barbie’s mother Mary was a Sunday school teacher so she was involved in the church. She graduated from Bladensburg Senior High School with her High School Diploma (Class of 1979, Go Mustangs !). While in school, Barbie was in Magical’s Chorus. Barbie loved to have a good time. She enjoyed hanging out at Paragon Nightclub in College Park, Maryland where she met her former husband John Earl Ferguson. They were married from 1989-2007 and raised 3 beautiful children together during that time. She enjoyed Sunday night dinners at her in-laws home, Friday night bowling dates at College Park Bowling Alley, and riding her bike with her daughter Jennifer along the scenic trails at nearby parks. Barbie was big on family and was very involved in her children’s extracurricular activities. Jennifer was a cheerleader for College Park and Marcus and Matthew played baseball and football. Whether she was carpooling or sitting on the sideline cheering her kids on, she made sure she showed up for them. Barbie was a hard working individual.
In her lifetime she worked for the PGCPS School Board as a Cafeteria lady serving children, she worked at Drug Fare (now known as RiteAid), as well as Rite Aid, Lowe’s and PartyCity where she was later promoted as a Manager while employed at both locations. Customer service was one of Barbie’s strengths. She was an amazing guide in the workforce as she was always willing to help others. When Barbie wasn’t on the go she enjoyed many things in her down time. She loved to watch shows like Dancing with the Stars, Sistas, Reba, Survivor and Shameless. If her cup wasn’t filled with her famous homemade iced tea, she had her Coca-Cola on standby. She had a beautiful collection of Anne Geddes Dolls and had a love for cats and horses. Barbie enjoyed family gatherings at her place for holiday meals, brunch and family game nights. Barbie loved to be surrounded by family.
Late last year Barbie’s health began to declined and she fell ill. Early this year she was diagnosed with Colon Cancer. She under went 2 major surgeries and chemotherapy. A few months later she was cleared and cancer-free ! Barbie’s passing was unexpected as she was progressing toward better days. Her strength and will to keep pushing forward no matter what she may have been going through will live on with us forever.
