Born on January 31, 1933, his was a life to be celebrated. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Shirley A. Sigmon of Leesburg, Virginia. He also leaves behind his greatest legacy in his three children: Danette Harris (David) of South Strafford, Vermont; Mark Sigmon (Robin) of Pasadena, Maryland and Linda Streaker (Paul) of Ashburn, Virginia, as well as his six loving grandchildren, Lauren, Joel, Reed, Ryan, Theodore and Katherine. Bergon loved all of his grandchildren dearly and was so proud of each and every one of them. He is also survived by numerous friends and relatives.
Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Bergon knew the area well. He and Shirley both graduated from Eastern High School in Washington, D.C., where they met. He served in the United States Coast Guard for four years in Connecticut where he began his education as an electrician. He would go on to become a Master Electrician and ran his own business for over 40 years in Maryland and the surrounding area.
One of Bergon’s greatest passions was his mountain retreat, “The Cabin,” in Clear Spring, Maryland. Many family gatherings happened there, which brought him incredible joy. The Sigmons retired to their dream home on a corner of “The Cabin” property where Bergon enjoyed gardening and his neighbors. Bergon was the quintessential Marylander, loving hunting on the Eastern Shore, eating crabs, playing in the ocean with his grandchildren and walking in the Clear Spring woods. He also loved telling jokes, no matter where he was. Bergon was dearly loved by his friends and family and will be deeply missed.
The family would like to thank all of Bergon’s caregivers, especially Tammy Dunlap, the staff at Heritage Hall and the Capital Caring Hospice staff and volunteers.
On Thursday, June 21, 2018, the family will receive guests at a viewing at Fort Lincoln Cemetery Funeral Home in Brentwood, Maryland from 10:30-11:30am. A graveside service will follow at Fort Lincoln Cemetery.
