She was born to the late Ernest Howard Baken and Ella Lee Robinson Baken on June 6, 1946, in Washington, DC. She was baptized at an early age at Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Northeast, DC, and later joined Greater Mt. Calvary Holy Church in Northeast DC.
She married Charles S. Duckett. Divorcing after 15 years of marriage, she raised their two children, Tracy, and Marc as a single parent. She taught them to love and trust God, to look out for each other, to fight the good fight, to have strength through trials and tribulation, and to question everything. She played a major role in raising her younger brother and sisters and she taught, encourage, and supported all of her nieces and nephews. Connie was an avid promoter of education.
After graduating from Eastern High School and secretarial school, she was employed in the federal government for 43 years and retired in November 2014. During those years, she was a dedicated AFGE union officer and Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) counselor, who fought for those who could not speak or fight injustices and inequality treatment they received during their employment. She also fought for employees rights to ensure that they received their well-deserved promotions.
She was well-liked and loved by family, friends, and colleagues. She was the go-to-person for advice, strategy and encouragement. She loved to be with her family and friends, laughing, enjoying music, dancing and a good piece of chicken. She was a warrior, comedienne, strategist, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend who will be truly missed.
She leaves to cherish her memory two children, Tracy L. Duckett and Marc S. Duckett; a grandson, Shane C. Duckett; a granddaughter, Makayla A. Duckett; three sisters, Linda B. Howard, Janet F. Baken and Toni T. Baken; a brother, Melvin H. Baken; nieces; nephews; and host of other relatives and friends.
