

Dorothy Jean Williams Cummings was born on June 18, 1935 Wellington, Texas to loving parents Mr. Walter Williams, and Eppie Williams (Branch). She was the youngest of five children in the Williams Family. Dorothy grew up in a Christian home and was baptized as a child at Macedonia Missionary Baptist church. Educated in Dallas she attended Dallas Public Schools finishing her studies at Booker T Washington High School.
Then in 1951 she was swept off her feet by Velton Cummings Sr. After a romantic courtship Velton Cummings Sr. and Dorothy J. Williams were married on August 7th 1954, and remained married for 54 years till he preceded her in November 2008.
They briefly moved Waukegan, Illinois for a short time then into Washington, DC 1960 where Velton’s job took them. Dorothy worked in the healthcare field serving the public as LVN at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, TX, and Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. She also served as a home healthcare aide later in her career. Working with the likes of foreign dignitaries from around the world.
Dorothy touched many lives. She was the dependable friend that was going to give it to you straight. She believed in tough love and telling it like it is. Those who knew her knew that was the way they were going to get it. She had few friends that she considered close Myra Hernandez, Carolyn Thomas to name a few, and Mr. Wilford Oliver faithful friend and companion who brought joy back into her life. Some of those friends whom have preceded her; Ms. Minnie Burns, Ms. Gora Bailey, and Ms. Agnes Rogers.
She is preceded in death by her parents and four siblings, William (Bill) Spiller, Hortense Spiller, Tom Paiton Williams, and Jaunita Lenora Williams.
The memories of love and life will be cherished by: two sons, Velton Cummings Jr. (NY), Vejon J. Cummings (VA), three daughters Deborah Taylor (IL), L. Jeannie Cummings (MD), and Cathy Cummings (DC). Also, six grandchildren Curtis (preceded), Catia, Shavonne, Raven, Kiana and DeShawn. Two greatgrandchildren La’Kai, and Riylin. Two nephews in Texas: Charles Otis Stewart, Jr, Velton James Sterling, and a host of other nieces and nephews throughout the United States.
