Edith Henrietta Stevens, age 98, passed away peacefully on 9 March 2024 in Arlington, Virginia, enveloped in prayer and surrounded by her loving family. Born on 6 May 1925 in Albion, Michigan, Edith was the cherished only child of Frank and Hedwig Jeske, who emigrated from Germany in 1923. A devout Catholic, Edith was deeply devoted to the Rosary and held a special reverence for the readings of Father Pio, drawing great strength and comfort from her faith throughout her life. She made it a point to visit most of the Blessed Virgin Mary appearance shrines, a testament to her deep faith and devotion.
Edith's life was also a narrative of love and partnership, marked by her marriages to John J. Rooney and Robert Stevens. John, the father of her children, shared with her the creation of a family legacy defined by love, while her subsequent marriage to Robert Stevens added further dimensions to her journey. Edith was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband John J. Rooney, and her second husband Robert Stevens, her beloved son Darren Rooney, and her dear grandchildren Steven Cowan and Gregory Rooney. These losses were chapters of sorrow in Edith's life, yet she met these challenges with resilience and grace that were characteristic of her indomitable spirit. She leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion with her children: Frank Rooney (Rita), Edith Cowan (Fred), John Rooney (Cindy), Gregory Rooney (Teresa), Tara Allen, and Dana Rooney. Her love also extends to her 23 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy into her life.
A passionate advocate for holistic medicine, Edith attributed her longevity to clean living and her extensive knowledge of holistic practices. Her affection for animals was a constant throughout her life, evidencing her compassionate nature. This affection towards animals inspired the family's request for memorial contributions to be made to the ASPCA in lieu of flowers, honoring Edith's compassionate spirit. Edith's hobbies included cooking, crocheting, and conversing in German with family and friends, embracing her heritage and sharing it with those around her. She also had an adventurous spirit, loving to travel both internationally and domestically with her family. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the Virginia Hospital Center for their compassionate care during Edith’s final days. Edith's life was a beacon of faith, love, and kindness, and she will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
