Esther Lacy Claxton age 81, passed away peacefully to join the Lord on Tuesday, May 7, 2024. She leaves a legacy of memories, food, entertainment, gardening, wisdom, courage, and everything concerning home life. She prepared her daughters well for life.
Her life began on January 15, 1943, Esther Antionette Moore was born in Lynchburg, Virginia to James Russell Moore, Jr., a blue-collar worker and Navy Seabee in World War II and Marie Antionette Moorman, a schoolteacher. She was the eldest of four children.
She attended Dunbar High School in Lynchburg, Virginia and married her auto mechanic husband, James Anderson Lacy. They later moved to Washington, DC and had three children of their own, Bridgette, Britta, and Bernadette.
Upon his death, Esther left domestic work and traded up for white collar work where she became a bookkeeper for The American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC) she stayed until she retired in 2012. In her middle years, she enjoyed participating in different clubs such as The Women’s National Democratic Club and entertaining each year after the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Dance and laid a foundation for having elegant fun! Everyone came back to Esthers’ house for food, drinks, and music.
Esther loved to explore travel to both exotic places and domestic as well. She traveled with her friends all over Asia, Australia, and the Caribbean. Esther loved to read books; they became her best friend. She helped her daughter Bridgette with her cookbook “Sunday Dinner”. She would read a novel and then plan a vacation around it. She parlayed her love of reading early in her children’s life.
Throughout her life in Washington, DC she was a constant member at Plymouth Congregational Church of Washington, D.C, later joining New St. James Pentecostal Church of Brentwood, Maryland where she was a member until passing away. She ensured her children participated in all things church; she made sure there were cookies to be delivered to Veteran’s, patches sewn on Girl Scout Uniforms, trying the latest fashions and hairdos. Esther was known for being stylish and classy in dress and decorum; she also found a new hobby in making baked goods she would sell on Sundays at church. The lines would be long for her cheesecake and apple pies. Esther was widowed three times, however her last husband George William Claxton, Jr. was truly the love of her life. May they both experience everlasting love together.
She is survived by two daughters, Bridgette A. Lacy of Raleigh, N.C. and Bernadette Lacy of Washington, D.C. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Britta Marie Lacy and her husband George W. Claxton, Jr., and brothers James Russell Moore, III., and William Booker Moore. She leaves two grandchildren, Russell Taylor Lacy, and Brittany Nicole Jefferson and two great grandchildren, Neille Jefferson and Baileigh Jefferson.She also leaves a sister, Barbara Ann Younger of Hyattsville, Maryland and a host of nieces, nephews’, family, and friends.
Esther loved warm weather and being outside, her favorite flower was yellow roses, now every day is the perfect garden, may she rest in peace. Until we meet again, you will be missed each day with loving memories, always.
