Harry Ray Smith

22 mayo , 19502 junio , 2019

God was ready for his solider and peacefully changed his duty station on Sunday, June 2, 2019 from this earth to his heavenly home. Harry Ray Smith was born on May 22, 1950 to the late Ned and Beatrice Smith in Halifax County, North Carolina. As a Child he attended public schools in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.

Harry later moved to Washington, DC where he meet the love of his life Mattie in 1969. They later joined in Holy Matrimony on September 25, 1971. Harry leaves to mourn his life, his wife, two daughters Lavern Stephens and Necol Hill (Karlyle)and one son Reginald Smith (Danielle). Harry joined New Chapel Baptist Church in 1980 under the leadership of Pastor William Hill. He became an ordained Deacon, December 4,1983 and served several ministries in the church until his departure.

Harry loved to fellowship with his church and extended family. Harry worked for Air Gas in Hyattsville, MD for 45 years and he retired in 2015. Harry was the family and friend's plumber, roofer, carpenter, car repairman and animal catcher: if it was broke, Harry could fix. Harry loved to fish in his spare time.

Even though he was considered a Washingtonian, Harry was an avid Dallas Cowboy fan, often rooting for the team on Sunday afternoons and during Monday Night Football. Harry enjoyed laughing and spending time with family and friends. He was well known for his outgoing personality allowing him to often engage in conversations with complete stranger.

Harry leaves to cherish his memory, his loving and devoted wife of 48 years, Mattie Smith; three children Lavern Stephens, Necol Hill and Reggie Smith; 17 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law and a gracious number of extended spiritual children and grandchildren. Harry's siblings Ned Jr., his twin Larry Pearl, Will and Margaret preceded him in death.

Harry lived a full life during which he developed many relations that he treasured. His fun loving and caring personality attracted many friends

"Uncle Harry" one FUNNY man! Will tell you the TRUTH no matter what! My most memorable moment was at one of Pastor Hill's birthday celebrations (50th I think) but Aunt Mattie and Catherine Johnson were dressed alike! And he said they looked like two large NEON SIGNS *lol* He will DEFINATELY be missed!

My love to my extended family. Col, you were there when I lost my guardian angel, I haven't forgotten. Just remember, with time, you learn to cope...

Love all of you... kisses and blessings

Deacon Harry Smith was such a friendly and wonderful man of God that I have ever met. We shared lots of laughs at NCBC. I thought of both of them quite often. Very good memories. He will be surely missed as a servant of the church. God chose him to do His Will on earth and now he has his rest in Jesus. Love always to the family. Mary Watkins FKA Cooper.

"Gathering flowers for the Master’s bouquet
Beautiful flowers that will never decay
Gathered by angels and carried away
Forever to bloom in the Master’s bouquet"

Our hearts were sadden to hear of the loss of Deacon Harry Smith.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time
