Throughout her life, Helen Devine epitomized what it means to have unconditional love. She was “everybody’s keeper”. She gave when she didn’t have and provided love and support to everyone that reached out to her. She offered food and shelter no matter what her circumstances were because she believed that God would provide. She raised her children in discipline and strength to live in this world and make their own decisions. Whether the outcome was good or bad, she was always there and supported them unconditionally. She was so proud of her children and her grandchildren. She loved them and gave them every part of her. She loved and cared for her parents who always had her back--through thick and thin. She was loved and adored by so many because of her genuine love for everyone she knew.
Helen was born in Holly Hill, South Carolina and lived with her grandma Queen and her cousins, as well as other family members. She loved and adored her family and loved being around everyone since she was the only child. Her parents, Hazel and Mervin, decided to settle in Washington DC. This was the beginning of her new life, transitioning from the country to the city. She attended DC Public Schools and the Washington Technical Institution College and earned several financial certifications while working in the banking industry. She gave birth the love of her life (her first born), Timothy and five years later she gave birth her daughter Valencia with her longtime companion Vincent.
Helen continued to work and raise her children with the support of her parents, nurturing them with the love and faith she had in God. She made sure her children were respectful and compassionate--just as she was; on the other hand, she didn't tolerate any bullying or nonsense from anybody. She was a combination of power, fearlessness, compassion and joy. She was every woman.
Until illness prevented her from working in 2001, Helen Devine diligently worked for many years as an Accounts Payable Technician with the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington DC.
Colleagues will forever remember her beautiful smile, beautiful personality and hard work. Always diligent and committed to work of excellence.
Cherished memories include dancing through the challenges. Often she and friends would close the office door, sing and dance through the challenges that the day would present. This I just one of the many cherished memories of her presence and time here with us!
At the age of 47 she suffered a massive stroke that would have taken anyone else out--but she was determined to be here for her family. She continued to try to take care of her grandchildren and herself until she needed the help of others. She was the sweetest person and yet she was a tough cookie. She stood by what she believed as she continued to loved everyone unconditionally.
She was preceded in death by her parents (Mervin and Hazel) and her granddaughter (Ayonna). She leaves behind a son Timothy Devine (Frankie) and a daughter Valencia Covert. She also leaves behind her grandchildren Timothy, Clorrinda, Condrea, Malencia, Frank, Timmia and Sean, as well as a host of great grandchildren, family members and friends.
