On Friday October 4, 2019, the Lord Jesus Christ called our beloved father and friend, Howard Lee Maynor better known as “Jack”; home from his earthly duties. He was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina; son of the late Raymond and Juanita Maynor. He was one of nine children. Six siblings: Ruby Lee, Raymond Maynor Jr., Thelma Maynor, Alberta Maynor, Robert Maynor, and Rosa Washington, preceded him in death. The family relocated to Newport News, VA and afterward, to Washington, D.C where he would attend H.D. Woodson High School. In 1981, Jack was introduced by his brother Robert Maynor to the love of his life Darnita Goodwin and the two had a little baby girl named Damia Mason also known as “Humbug” to her Dad.
Jack always displayed a strong desire and commitment to being a hard worker. He loved driving dump and snow plow trucks as he wished for and appreciated blizzards in the winter. He enjoyed fixing old cars, mowing the lawn, planting flowers and home-grown fruits and vegetables. He truly lived up to his nickname “Jack” as he was one of all trades. He took pride in his workmanship and dedicated over 30 years to Howard Lallande Asphalt Company.
He was an old country boy who loved his mother and sister Rosa’s cooking. You could always find him frying fish from one of his many fishing charters. He lived for enjoying the simple things in life and treasured taking long drives to visit his family and friends in Newport News, VA and Rocky Mount, NC. He enjoyed spending holidays with his family and always had a smile on his face and a funny story to share to make you laugh. He loved singing the song “Hey You! Get Off My Mountain” by The Dramatics.
A few of his favorite sayings were “10’4”, “Alright Boss”, and “Got Dammitt”!! He enjoyed cracking jokes and being silly. His family knew him as a stubborn buzzard and a strong man with a kind and pure heart who was always there to help you out. He truly was loved by his family and he loved them very much in return.
Jack will be greatly missed and will live in all our hearts. He leaves to cherish his memory: one daughter: Damia Mason of Upper Marlboro, MD; one granddaughter; Daryn Lia Mason; one son-in-law: Darryl Mason; two sisters: Blossie Massenburg of Newport News, Virginia and Nancy Branklin of Fredericksburg, Virginia, and a host of other relatives and friends.
