Joan was born in Washington, D.C., on August 12, 1935, the daughter of Robert and Edith Battle. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Alvin Goldberg, who passed away on March 30, 1992. Joan and Alvin were married for 31 years, and Joan never remarried.
Joan is survived by her four children: Robert (and his wife Ruby), Elizabeth (and her husband Mark), David (and his wife Suzy), and Steven (and his husband Trehan). She is also survived by seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Joan was a strong and fiercely independent woman. She grew up in Texas and attended a prestigious high school in Highland Park, an accomplishment she was very proud of. After graduating, she returned to Washington, D.C., where she began working at Riggs Bank. It was there that she met her future husband, Alvin.
Joan spent more than 30 years working as an accountant, holding various positions throughout her career. She did not retire until the age of 70, a testament to her work ethic and determination.
A service will be held at Fort Lincoln Funeral Home and Cemetery, Brentwood, MD on Sunday, January 11th 2026.
