Mrs. Marion E. Matthews was born June 9, 1931, in Gordonsville, VA. She was born to the Late Mr. Joseph Young and Cora (Verdier) Young. On Wednesday, March 4, 2020, at the Washington Center For Aging in North East DC., Mrs. Matthews was called Home by our Good Lord and Savior. They say that The Good Lord only picks the prettiest flowers, and, he has done so with you Mother. We know that The Lord will not give us more than our hearts can bear; however, it has been life changing for all of her children.
Mrs. Matthews received her formal education at The Jefferson School in Gordonsville, VA, The Gretz Junior High School in Philadelphia and at The "Old" Cardozo High School in Northwest Washington, DC.
She began her career at the Washington National Airport/Reagan National Airport just outside of Washington, DC, in the late 1940's, and years later provided "Days Work" (as it was known), in a variety of homes and businesses.
Marion (Young) met Woodrow Matthews in 1950, where they began to corte and later shared a life together that resulted in nine (9) children.
Mrs. Matthews was a country girl that liked the simple things in life and cared for people, regardless of their shortcomings. She even liked the rain and the smell of grass in the air. She was the type of person that would take a slice of bread and cut it into 12 pieces, which provided for ALL of her family and others in need. Mom enjoyed walking around the track with her friends at the nearby Theodore Roosevelt High School. Her hobbies were cooking, cleaning, sewing, painting, dancing, laughing and watching television with the family. She also enjoyed entertaining with friends and riding in the car with the family. Mom's nicknames included: Missy, Grandma-G, Momma-Poo, Sexy Mom and Mack.
Mrs. Matthews was one of the first residents to live at the Johnson/Bahr Towers Senior Citizen Center on Upshur Street in Northwest and resided there for more than 30 years, where she had met many friends and new neighbors.
