

A beloved wife, mother, sister and friend gained her wings on November 30, 2025. Mary Ann Thomas was born on February 21, 1946 to Willie Davis and Joan Toney. She entered this world with a spirit that would bring joy, warmth and love to all who knew her. Mary Ann was lovingly raised by Lawson and Rosa Fortune. Surrounded by faith and family, Mary Ann accepted Christ early in life and was a member of Goodwill Presbyterian Church for over 18 years.
She graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1964 and later moved to Washington, D.C. where she met the man she would spend 55 years with and from this union had two children Pynette and Darrell Thomas.
Mary Ann was passionate about children and worked as a teacher's aid for the District Public school system for many years. She was a dedicated and faithful member of Hemingway Temple African Methodist Episcopal church for over 40 years. She served in different capacities such as being a member of the missionary society, the steward board and participated in the feeding program where she devoted her time and resources. Mary Ann never met a stranger and always welcomed people with laughter and love. To know her was to know genuine love and compassion.
She was preceded in death by sisters Maggie Mathis, Ernestine Este, Sophetta Parks and one brother Thomas Fortune.
Mary Ann leaves to cherish her memory her husband Charles; her daughter Pynette Thomas of Colorado and Darrell Thomas of D.C. One grandson Caleb Thomas, a loving sister Annabelle Presley (Richard) of Maryland, two brothers Irvin Fortune (Annie) of South Carolina and Beasley Fortune of Washington, D.C. and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
A visitation will be held at Hemingway Temple African Methodist Episcopal Church, located at 501 P St NW, Washington, DC 20001, on December 12, 2025, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am.
The funeral service will follow at the same venue, starting at 11:00 am on December 12, 2025.
