Our beloved, Matthew Lee Batts, age 86, of Washington, DC was surrounded by his family as he peacefully transitioned to be with the Lord on September 26, 2020.
He was born on March 18, 1934 to the late James and Pearlie Batts in Tarboro,
North Carolina. He was the youngest of 9 children, sharing a special bond with his twin sister, Mattie Bea, who predeceased him. He is survived by his loving sister, Annie Jakes of Brooklyn.
Matthew received his formal education in the North Carolina public school system.
He later moved to Newport News and met his future wife, Doreatha. They married in 1955 and were blessed with 65 years of marriage. While living in Newport News, they had two children, Anthony and Darlene. Several years later, they moved to Washington, D.C and were blessed with two additional children, Lisa and Traci.
Matthew worked for the Postal Service and eventually moved his employment to the
Prince George’s County Public School Board where he retired in 1992. In his spare time, he enjoyed traveling and the finer things in life. He had a love for cooking, and his Sunday morning breakfasts were known throughout the family. His fried potatoes, fried green apples, and lemonade were legendary. He also enjoyed gardening, fishing, playing the piano, and driving DC cabs for over 25 years. He was affectionately known by his cab number "148," and also for his kindness, infectious laugh, and trademark swag. But mostly, he treasured his time spent with family, and at family reunions with his many nieces and nephews by whom he was truly loved.
As a man of faith, Matthew led his family to join St. Marks Baptist Church in
Washington, D.C., where he sang in the Male Chorus. He was respected as a role model by members and leadership for his wisdom and for being an engaged parent. Eventually, Matthew moved his membership to the Isle of Patmos Baptist Church where he sang bass with the Male Chorus and remained a loyal member for over 30 years.
Matthew is survived by his loving wife, Doreatha, four children: Anthony (Gwen), Darlene, Lisa (Lionel) and Traci (Ken), 9 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
