Meta Carolyn Williams departed this life on Thursday, July 21, 2022. She was born in Newton Grove, N.C. Meta was the seventh of eleven children. Starting from an early age, she was an active member of White Oak Disciples of Christ Church. After getting married she moved to Washington. She earned her nursing degree at what is now the University of the District of Columbia. Meta eagerly pursued a rewarding career in nursing, first in Pediatrics at Providence Hospital and later in Psychiatry at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital from which she retired. In retirement, she remained informed and conversant about health care practices, utilizing her knowledge to assist neighbors, friends, and family members in maintaining their health. Over the nearly 60 years she lived in Washington, DC, Meta made many wonderful friends. They fondly remember her sense of humor, lively storytelling, and compassionate spirit. Meta cheerfully helped others in her community and at church. She was a long-time member of Michigan Park Christian Church and later joined New Solid Rock Church Ministries, Inc. where she served until her recent illness.
Meta was a devoted mother to her three children, enthusiastically supporting their growth, education, as well as their interests, including Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, music, athletics, and community service. In her later years, she met and married Zack Williams. Meta enjoyed reading spiritual books, listening to gospel music, participating in church outings, spending time with her husband, and ‘spoiling’ her grandchildren.
Meta was predeceased by her loving husband of 26 years, Zack Williams. She is survived by her three children, Gwendolyn Taylor, Terrence Melvin (Taunya), and Carol Muleta (John). Meta lived to see her family grow to span five generations. She was the loving grandmother of Wanda, Willamena, LaToya, DeWitt, Theresa (Mark), Matthios, and Zacharias. She also leaves a host of great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren to cherish her memory.
Meta is survived by two brothers she dearly adored, Lee Warren (Daisy) and Joseph Warren (Susan), along with her foster sister Mattie Lee Oates and beloved sister-in-law, Pearl Warren. Eight of her beloved siblings preceded her in death: Chrystabelle, William, Allen, Marshall, Elizabeth, James, George, and Repsie.
We will dearly miss her, but take comfort in the assurance that God knows her by name. He has welcomed her warmly and given her sweet rest.
