I believe in honouring your heroes before they are gone and unfortunately I won't have the chance with Miss Jenkins.  I stumbled upon Miss Jenkin's story when Relisha Rudd went missing back in 2014. Back then, the interest in The Freeway Phantom started to peak. It was then that the county at large began to converse about the lack of respect we show to young Black girls and women. As a young Black girl at the time, Black woman now, I learned the grapevine about Miss Jenkins role in the case and how she fought to keep the hunt alive. I knew then that if no one had us, WE had us. I continue to operate in that very manner to this day. We *must* protect each other because as it has been shown time and again, no one else will. I thank Miss Jenkins to the love she had in her heart for those girls and for the trail she blazed for Black women in law who fought be the moral compass it so direly lacks to this day. May her memory be a blessing. May her life be an example, and may her work be continued in the fight for Brenda Williams, Carol Spinks, Nenomishia Yates, Brenda Woodard, Brenda Crockett, Darlenia Johnson, and who might have gone unknown.

I met Romaine in 2021, when I was researching the Freeway Phantom case. She invited me into her home to talk and we stayed in touch ever since. We shared work stories and talked about cases. She always asked how my children. I was impressed by her knowledge and grit. As a black woman who works with law enforcement in child abuse cases today, I see Romaine as a trailblazer and hero. I am honored that I got to know her. Condolences to her family. She was truly amazing.

I had the pleasure of working with Romaine for several years prior to her retirement from the police department. I was a young detective and she was a veteran Detective Sergeant. She was in charge of the Fugitive and Career Criminal Units at that time.  She was always approachable, and always gave good advice. She was old school police, and required that things be done by the numbers and the proper way. She was also one of the nicest people that you could meet. I was fortunate enough to end up supervising her son, Lenard, towards the end of my career, and i am certain that he would always consider "what would my mom have done?" in many situations. I am sure that she set high standards, and I know that she was very proud of him and his accomplishments.

I just found out today that Romaine passed. Such a phenomenal woman. Romaine was my shero. A one-of-kind natural beauty and extremely intelligent.  I will miss her dearly.  May she she rest in Paradise

It has been a pleasure knowing you and sharing the block with you. You always shared a bright and welcoming smile. You will be missed by those near and far. Hold it down in heaven until we meet again.

My neighbors for more than 47 years and just knowing the Jenkins were nearby brought such comfort and security to us. Our sons bonded as brothers and remain the same today. Such an independent sweet lady and will be missed in our community. We are here for you Len. God blessings be upon us all.

I first met Sgt. Romaine Jenkins when I was an officer assigned to the First District. If I had the occasion to visit Sex Squad , you would usually be greeted by her. She was professional,  extremely knowledgeable and always immaculately dressed. Sgt. Jenkins was the epitome of what you, as a young female officer aspired to be. When I was promoted and assigned to the Sex Offense Branch, she was working for another unit so we never had the chance to work together, but I  will always remember her, as  a  female who raised the bar for other female officers.
