

Shirley Batts Beavers of Washington, D.C. passed away peacefully on Tuesday April 4, 2023. Survived by her devoted friend Wilbert Manual; sister Dorothy B. Wilson (William Jr.); niece Lisa Wilson Edwards (Robert Jr.); nephew William J. Wilson III (Lucy); great-niece Helen Wilson Edwards; great-nephew Robert H. Edwards III. She is preceded in death by her son Ronald O. Beavers; her mother Helen Jones Batts; and her father Clarence Batts.
Shirley was born in Petersburg, Virginia on June 5, 1935, and attended Peabody High School. She graduated from Virginia State College (now University). Shirley obtained her Master's Degree in Linguistics from Georgetown University, Washington, DC. Shirley was a life-long teacher. She began her teaching career in Charlottesville, Virginia, then in Charles County, Maryland before settling in Washington, D.C. Shirley was a devoted educator. She taught English for 35 years, primarily at Chamberlain High School in Washington D.C. During her lengthy tenure, she also served as an Assistant Principal at Chamberlain. She dedicated her life to educating her students to help them achieve academic success, which was very important to her.
Shirley loved her wonderful neighbors and many friends in the Riggs Park area of Washington D.C. where she lived for almost 65 years. Shirley dearly loved cooking and being with family and friends. She greatly enjoyed traveling and seeing many areas of the country.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 12, 2023, 9:30 to 10:30 am, followed by a service at Fort Lincoln Funeral Home, 3401 Bladensburg Road, Brentwood, Maryland 20722.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in the memory of Shirley B. Beavers to Medstar Montgomery General Medical Center in Olney, Maryland.
