

Sylvia Patricia (Bailey) Royal was born July 21, 1941 at Gallingers Hospital in Washington, DC to the late Profit and Elvira Bailey. She was born at 7 months premature. The family moved back to New York where she was raised in Carle Place, NY with her late brother Edward Bailey. In 1963 she started classes at Glen Cove Community Hospital for practical nursing, worked in pediatrics for 2 years and continued with her education at Nassau Community College. In the fall of 1966, she started attending Freedman’s Hospital School of Nursing, in Washington DC and then graduated in May of 1970. It is there, at Howard University, where she met her late husband Dr. George C. Royal Jr. They were married in 1969 in Westbury, NY.
After graduating from Freedman’s she began working at Providence Hospital for a tenure of 40 years. She worked in Labor and delivery, postpartum and her favorite Special care nursery (NICU). During her tenure at Providence She decided to go back to school to get her BSN and attended Catholic University in 1986.
Outside of working she was very active with her Freedman’s Alumni Local Club. She served as a secretary at the local club and the Executive Board.
Sylvia had many hobbies such as knitting, crocheting, tatting and sewing. In her downtime, she enjoyed knitting, crocheting with her 2 clubs she was affiliated with at Senior Connection and Woodridge Library. She also participated in activities with friends at the Model Cities Senior Center.
Sylvia Royal is survived by her children, Geraldine Royal-Hopkins, Chris Royal, Gregory Royal, Michelle McNear, and Eric Royal. Her son George Royal III preceded her in death in 2019. She has 10 grandchildren, Paris, Phillip, Jaiden, Cheyenne, Tanner, Amaya, Brant, Zari, Marist, and Galen. She also has 1 great grandchild, Jurnee. She is also remembered by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
