Birth/Born: October 8, 1938 - Death/Died: January 17, 2024
Will Kidd, Jr. unexpectedly passed away in Washington, DC, after a long battle with multiple health challenges. Will Kidd, Jr. was born in Washington, DC to the late Will Kidd, Sr. and Helen Bartley Kidd. He married twice and was recently widowed. Many called him “Kidd”, some called him “Daddy”, some called him “Pop-pop”, while others called him “Mr. Kidd.” He was fondly known as a big brother, brilliant mentor, easy-going cool father, and giving granddad. He was a loving and devoted husband to his late wife, Dora Oldes Kidd. He never missed a Sunday, regardless of rain, sleet or snow to visit her resting place.
Will Kidd, Jr. attended Phelps Vocational High School in Washington, DC in 1956, where he received his electrical construction and maintenance certificate. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1956 and was honorably discharged in 1964. In 1975, he obtained certifications from the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) in HVAC systems, radio and TV repair, and electrical/electronic drafting. He also completed computer upgrade and hardware repair; cable television installation; locksmithing; and ATM security certification courses. Kidd was widely known as a licensed master electrician in the District of Columbia, since 1969, Prince George’s County since 1979 and the State of Maryland since 1987. He was also well known as a licensed electrical contractor in the District of Columbia since 1969. As an electrician, he worked at the following security-controlled locations: the State Department, CIA, White House Group, Pentagon, IRS, Secret Service field office, General Services Administration (GSA), FBI field office, Navy and Munitions department, Bureau of Standards and White House Police Headquarters. He held positions at GSA as electrical leader, assistant foreman and foreman inspector from 1961-1986 until he retired in 1986 from the GSA. After he retired from full-time employment, he realized how much he enjoyed teaching, so he became an instructor at UDC, teaching electrical wiring; at Montgomery College, teaching apprentice electricians; at IEC-Chesapeake, teaching electrical contractors; and at USAR Army Engineer teaching vehicle maintenance and HHA electrical code classes. Also, after retirement, he was employed as a locksmith, Brinks security guard, armed special police officer and armored vehicle driver for ATM service and the Wells Fargo Company. Everyone who knew him knew he was the “jack of all trades”. He loved creating things, building things, fixing things, and taking things apart, such as, anything with electrical components like televisions and computers. As a hobby, he personally built each model train piece and a fully functioning train track set in which he delighted. He also found enjoyment in building model military tanks, planes, air craft carriers and ships. For many years, he drove his motorcycles and then he decided to study aeronautics and took flying lessons, so he could fly private planes.
He is survived by his children, Nadine Kidd, Ronda Kidd, Lenise Kidd, and Machan Kidd Niederriter (Franklin); grandson, Brandon Kidd; five great-grandchildren; stepchildren, Kashira Oldes and Keilon Oldes (Sinovia); three step-grandchildren; three sisters, Elizabeth Kidd Lawrence, Helen Kidd Lomax and Ludie M. Kidd; close friend, Vernelle Brown; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by wife, Dora Oldes Kidd; grandson, Jesse Will Kidd(J.W.) and sisters, Joanne Kidd Rice, Olether Kidd Turner and Mary Ann Kidd.
Take comfort in knowing that the memory of Will Kidd, Jr. will live on in the hearts of all those who loved and admired him.
