John Allen Ristow, affectionately known as “Butch,” passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 2, 2025, in Cape Coral, Florida, at the age of 88. He showed strength and determination as he worked to heal and recover following a hip fracture in April.
John was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Dorothy (Cook) and Bernard Ristow. His roots in Milwaukee shaped his character and values throughout his life.
John was proud to serve his country with distinction, completing two tours of duty in the United States Air Force as an airplane mechanic. His service took him to Perin Air Force Base in Denison, Texas, and Barksdale Air Force Base in Shreveport, Louisiana.
A dedicated worker, John took on various jobs to support his family, including driving a school bus, managing rental properties, and working in factories. His main profession was with the United States Postal Service, where he ultimately retired as the postmaster of the Airport Facility. After retiring and moving to Florida, John started a family vending business, which he managed until his passing.
John is survived by his four daughters- Diane Welch, Lisa (Scott) Christophersen, Karen Reimer, and Mary Ristow-Dey. He was especially delighted to share that he was the proud grandfather of 13 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother James Ristow and his sisters Shirley (Thomas) Packard and Joan (Ron) Kuhs.
He is preceded in death by the love of his Life, Judith (Wanke) Ristow, his parents, Dorothy and Bernard Ristow; his sisters Nancy (Roy) Gregg and Dorothy (Joseph) Magestro; his brother Ron (Thea) Ristow; and his grandson Alex Welch.
John cherished his time on the water, finding joy in fishing and boating. He was an enthusiastic card player, with Gin Rummy and Cribbage as his favorites. His loyal companion dog, Dee-O-Gee, was always by his side, providing comfort and companionship.
