

A loving wife, mother, stepmother, grandmother, sister-in-law and aunt, she had celebrated her 91st birthday last summer with her family. Fascinated by people, she made many lifelong friends wherever she lived, starting with a group of girls she had met as a child. She was a strong believer in volunteerism and was recognized by the Governor of Maryland for her service to nursing home residents at Riderwood, where she had lived since 2002. She also taught English as a second language and was a lifelong member of the League of Women Voters. Adele had a great love of learning, taking many Elderhostel courses and trips abroad after her retirement as administrative assistant to the dean of Northeastern University’s School of Pharmacy. At Riderwood, she was enrolled in courses on t’ai chi until age 90 and current events until her illness. Born in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, on July 17, 1922, she was the daughter of Milton and Martha “Dolly” (Leopold) Lilienthal.
After graduating from Pottsville High School in 1940, she studied at the Marjorie Webster Secretarial School in Boston, where she met her husband, Milton Epstein. They married in 1944. The couple lived in Newton, MA, until Milton’s death in 1968. Adele married William Schulman in 1971 and lived with him in Natick, MA, until his death in 1989. Her brother, Joseph Lilienthal, died in 1966.
Adele leaves three children: Dr. Neal Epstein, Chevy Chase, MD, Ned Epstein, North Andover, MA and Marge Epstein, PHD, Oak Park, IL. Her family also includes stepdaughter Joanne Sugar; daughters-in-law Dr. Deborah Warden, Judy Epstein and Colette Lueck; stepson-in-law Ron Bitzer; grandchildren Max Epstein, Daniel Epstein and Seth Lueck-Epstein; step-grandchildren Joshua Bitzer and Alex Bitzer; sister-in-law Ione Geier; niece Lisa Von Ahn; nephew Stephen Lilienthal; and many long-time friends.
Funeral services will be Thursday, Dec. 26, at noon from the Stanetsky Memorial Chapel, 1668 Beacon Street in Brookline, MA. Burial will be beside her late husband Milton Epstein in the Sharon Memorial Park Cemetery in Sharon, MA.
