

Bella Cohen, daughter of the late Barney and Ida (Rosenovick) Sworin, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Monday December 3, 2012 in Delray Beach, FL. She formerly lived in Newton, MA before moving to Florida 20 yrs ago. She follows her beloved husband Philip of 69 years who passed away June 27th of this year. Bella is survived by her 3 children 12 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Devoted mother of Barry Cohen & his wife Myra, Laraine Cohen Levy & her husband Jeffry, Richard Cohen & his wife Laurie and the late Barbara Koch Daniels. Grandchildren Cindy Koch, Amy & Peter Gottlieb, Jeffrey & Sandy Koch, Andrew Cohen & Amelia Burgos, Jonathan Cohen & Shantelle Maxwell, Daniel & Lauren Cohen, Allison & Andrew Margolies, Lindsay Cohen & Brian Nakash, Alexander Cohen and Tyler Murphy, Matthew Cohen and Becca Selma Schoen, Emily Cohen and Lily Cohen. Great grandchildren include Hannah Koch, Benjamin Koch, Eliza Koch, Isabella Gottlieb, Brette Gottlieb, Brandon Koch, Jordan Cohen, Alexa Cohen, and Sam Cohen. Dear sister of the late Sarah Reeves Mulley, Lillian Rothman, Rose Aronson and Eleanor Lawson. she is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Bella, whose husband Philip was a co-founder of Lechmere Sales supported many philanthropic causes. Mr. and Mrs. Cohen were early organizers of what is today known as mission trips to Israel. Their support of Israel was so well received and appreciated that the then Prime Minister of Israel, Golda Meir, invited them for a Passover Seder. The Cohens also donated rooms and funded medical research at the Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem in addition to funding ongoing student scholarship programs for 25 students to attend the Hebrew University annually. Mr. and Mrs. Cohen have been major supporters of the Boston Children's Hospital for the past 29 years, their funding included, a room on the bone marrow transplant floor, a room in the blood donation center, and a resource center on the oncology floor for patients and their families. Mrs. Cohen also supported the South Palm Beach Jewish Federation and was recognized as a Lion of Judah and a LOJE benefactor. Mr. & Mrs. Cohen were longtime members of Temple Emanuel in Newton, Mass as well as the Blue Hills Country Club in Canton, Mass and the Hamlet Country Club in Delray Beach, Florida. The Cohens took great pleasure in traveling the world with their children and grandchildren. Bella was an avid bridge player and golfer along with her husband. Services will be held at the Levine Chapels, 470 Harvard St., BROOKLINE, MA, on Wednesday December 5th at 1:00pm. Burial in the Shara Tfilo Cemetery, 776 Baker St., West Roxbury,MA. Memorial Observance will follow at the home of Laraine Levy until 8 PM on Wednesday. Thursday shiva will be 2 PM-5 PM with minyan at 4:30 PM.
