

Channah Berkovits of Newton passed away peacefully on June 22, 2024 at the age of 92. Channah (Friedman) was born in Czechoslovakia (now Ukraine) on November 3, 1931 and was the only member of her immediate family to survive the Auschwitz concentration camp. She moved to Israel in 1947, where she worked as a nurse at Hadassah Hospital and met Barouh Berkovits. They emigrated to the United States in 1959 and were married for 53 years. Moving to Newton in 1967, Channah was devoted to raising her children and grandchildren and cherished her community at Temple Emanuel in Newton.
She is survived by her loving children, Naomi (Jonathan Marder), Nathan (Roseli), and Rachel (Michael Miller), her grandchildren, Ruth (Shai), Benjamin (Sapir), David, Tal, Sam (Lottie), Anna (Philipp), Sarah (Michael) and Jacob, and great grandchildren, Ziv, Doron, Yakir, Barkai, Yair, Yannai and Elona. Our heartfelt thanks go to the staff at Springhouse Senior Living for their gentle and compassionate care.
Services will be at Temple Emanuel, 385 Ward Street, Newton on Tuesday, June 25 at 10:00 a.m. followed by the burial at Temple Emanuel Memorial Park, 497 North Street, Randolph. Shiva at the home of Rachel & Michael Miller immediately following the interment through 4 pm and then 7-9 pm. Shiva continues Wednesday 1-4 pm, 7-9 pm, Thursday 7-9 pm, Friday 1-4 pm and Sunday 1-4 pm.
