Left to cherish her memory are her children, Sheryl & David Winstone, Steven & Melanie Ross, and Michael & Sharon Ross, as well her beloved grandchildren Jonathan Winstone and Jonathan Pasaoa, Daniel Ross, Abby Winstone, and David Ross.
Mom was the seventh child of Morris & Celia Shapiro, immigrants who achieved the American dream of owning property and raising honest, hardworking and successful children.
A sickly child, Mom was often surprised late in her life to find herself the last surviving sibling. She and her siblings and in-laws were very close, and they always remained in her memory.
Married in 1946, Mom's "professional" career ended when her first child was born. Teaching by example, Dorothy and Fred Ross taught their children how to live life as a mentch, and she was always busy and fully engaged in her communities. She was a volunteer Girl Scout leader. When we were in grade school, Mom ran the thrift shop in the basement; when we went to Hebrew school, Mom ran the car pool; while we were in school, Mom raised money every year for the Kiddie Kamp, and for the Temple Emanuel (Newton) Sisterhood, and for the Solomon Schecter Day School – where she also served on the Education Committee - and on and on. She also served Temple Emanuel magnificently - and patiently - as Dad's "First Lady" during his time as president, and together they were also Presidents of the Couples Club and Chairs of the Supper Forum.
At home, Mom was the best: an exemplary homemaker, a complementary partner for Dad, an advocate for her children at school, and of course, a gifted baker who put love (and often chocolate) into everything she brought to the family. Mom was also artistic and curious, dabbling in projects that included gardening, painting, ceramics, beading, wearable art, paper flowers, shell art, and of course, cake decorating. She taught us how to play Casino, and she excelled at beach volleyball.
Although she suffered from dementia which often robs its victims of their most cherished memories, Mom always knew the names of her children and grandchildren, and recognized us in pictures. Her most favorite memories were always of her family, past and present, and her best last days were when her children would update her about her beloved grandchildren. We will miss her terribly and will keep her memory, always, for a blessing.
