Ellen Naomi Winer was born on May 2, 1935 in Boston, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Isadore and Charlotte Friedberg of Brighton. Beginning in her high school years at Brighton High, Ellen placed a high value on education and this would continue throughout her life. She earned her first scholarships through organizations sponsoring outstanding female Jewish students. Ellen went on to earn advanced degrees from Northeastern University and Boston University, including a PhD from Boston University. She also did some post-doctoral work at the University of Massachusetts in Lowell and Endicott College. Ellen was the director of Co-op Education at Northeastern University for over 15 years. She was also the founder and president of Interface Software in the 1980’s. She ended her academic career at Boston College in the 1990’s.
Amidst all of these educational opportunities, she met the love of her life, Harvey Winer. They married in August, 1956 and then traveled to Germany while Harvey was stationed there with the Army from 1956-1958. They spent most of their adult lives together living in the town of Brookline, Massachusetts. Ellen also enjoyed traveling to London, Scotland and Maine with her family.
In addition to her academic achievements, Ellen enjoyed playing piano in her youth, listening to music, swimming to stay fit, going out to dinner with family and spending time with her grandchildren. She could often be spotted at one of their sporting events, dance recitals or taking them to the movies or Fun and Games with Harvey.
Ellen leaves behind her husband of 67 years Harvey Winer; her son William Winer and his wife Kim; two grandchildren, Becki and John Winer; and brothers Mordecai and Lester Friedberg.
The family will hold a private graveside service for Ellen.
Her family appreciates the care that she received at the end of her life from the staff at Brookdale at Cushing Park Assisted Living and Carlyle House, both located in Framingham.
