Ernest M. Greenberg, 95, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2021. He was born in Providence, R.I., on November 17, 1925, son of Leo Greenberg and Molly Beller Greenberg. He graduated from Mount Pleasant High School, and attended Brown University before enlisting in the Army during World War II. He served with the 78th Infantry Division in Europe.
Ernest was the subject of an article in Stars and Stripes that on December 13, 1944, during a German mortar and artillery barrage, a 150 mm artillery shell landed in his hay-lined foxhole. The shell set fire to the hay, but did not explode. He and his buddy escaped unharmed. He was awarded the Bronze Star, the Combat Infantry Badge, and three Battle Stars.
After the war, he resumed his studies at Brown University, graduating as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He earned his medical degree from State University of New York College of Medicine, Downstate Medical Center. He completed his internship and residency training in anesthesiology at Grasslands Hospital, Valhalla, N.Y. He was a Diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology and a Fellow of the American College of Anesthesiology.
Ernest was a member of the Anesthesia Department at Framingham Union Hospital for 36 years. He was a former Chief of Anesthesiology (1974-76) and Medical Director of Respiratory Therapy (1968-78), and President of Anesthesia Associates of Framingham, Inc. (1981-92). He was also an Assistant Clinical Professor of Anesthesiology at Boston University School of Medicine.
After he retired in 1992, he became a volunteer at the New England Wildflower Society and the Arnold Arboretum. He was a long time member of Temple Beth Am. He enjoyed skiing, sailing, birding and gardening, but most of all his family.
He leaves his loving wife of 68 years, Libby Jacobson Greenberg, and three children and their spouses: Mark Greenberg and Karen Pushee from Hanover, N.H.; Lynn and Gerry Rakos from Stamford, CT; and Paul Greenberg and Renee Goldberg from Westwood, MA. He also leaves six grandchildren: Zack Greenberg and Liam Pushee; Dan and Allie Rakos; and Jake and Simone Greenberg.
Due to Covid restrictions, a private family service will be held on Monday, January 18, 2021 at Stanetsky Memorial Chapel in Canton, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a food bank of your choice.
