After a life of giving endless good cheer and love to others, our beloved Gil Slovin died, at 92, Wednesday July 16. Oh how his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched will miss his beautiful smile, his worrying over us, his wonderful sense of humor, his love.
Born and raised on the East Side of Worcester, Gil was doted on by parents Benny and Jenny Slovin, sister Dorothy (Joe Marcus) and brother Harold (Myra). Raised by a veritable village, he grew up among a web of family and friends. He nurtured his many friendships throughout his life.
After graduating from UMass and serving in the U.S. Air Force, Gil returned to Worcester with Janet (Cohen), the wife he cherished for nearly 70 years. They raised a beautiful family- daughters Nancy (Matt Zaitchik), Judy (Roger Lowenstein), and son Richard. Starting with no financial backing, Gil fashioned a remarkable career as a stockbroker.
He was deeply involved in the community serving as president of the Worcester Jewish Federation and leader in his synagogue. He avidly joined in missions to Israel.
His fondest calling may have been as grandfather--to Jesse Zaitchik (Fae), Benny Zaitchik (Alyssa), Jacob Levenfeld (Lydia Schulman), Robert Levenfeld (Tori), Sammy Levenfeld and Jonny Levenfeld. AND to five cherished great grandchildren. He was the adored brother-in-law to Ann Marchette, and patriarch to the extended family.
Gil and Janet moved to Boston and in retirement he indulged in the city’s pleasures: the Boston Public Library, the BSO, wandering about the Pru, ever running into his many friends. He and Janet found a spiritual home at Temple Emanuel. Into his late 80s, Gil volunteered at Women’s Lunch Place and Dana Farber. Scores of patients undergoing cancer treatments looked forward to seeing Gil as the one bright spot in their day.
We will forever miss his endless warmth, his big heart, and his optimistic outlook on the life he loved.
