Howard Sandweiss Gray passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, May 30, 2021 after a long battle with prostate cancer. He is survived by his beloved wife, Susan Phillips -Gray, his sons, Jonathan and Geoffrey Gray, his brothers Joel and Stephen Gray and his wife Linda Baron, his sister-in-law, Donna Phillips and Mariluce de Souza, and a huge loving extended family and friends. Howie was the son of the late George and Ida Delle Sandweiss Gray. He is the son-in-law of Barbara (Halpern) Phillips and the late Bernard M. Phillips. He is also survived by his beloved golden doodle Lily.
Howie was born in Newton and graduated from Newton South High School and attended Franklin Pierce College. He lived in Peterborough NH for 10 years and was one of the first managers at Eastern Mountain Sports as an expression of his love for the outdoors and hiking in the New England mountains. He moved to Brookline where he married Susan before returning to Newton to raise his family.
Howie was an early employee of Signature Apparel, a subsidiary of New England Sportswear, before starting his own business, LogoWorks, in West Newton. He retired in 2019 from MPG Promotions which acquired LogoWorks.
Howie rode in the Pan Mass Challenge for 23 years and volunteered for the PMC for 6 years after his health didn’t allow him to continue to ride, raising over $200,000 for Dana -Farber. He was instrumental in obtaining funding for the PMC Gray SPORE In Prostate Cancer Fund.
Funeral service will be at Sharon Memorial Park on Wednesday, June 2, 2021 at 2:00. Donations should he directed to the Dana-Farber PMC Gray SPORE in Prostate Cancer Fund, c/o Development Office 10 Brookline Place West, 6th floor, Brookline MA 02445-7226.
Shiva will be at his late residence after the funeral service until 7:30, Thursday, Friday and Sunday from 2-4:30.
