

Born in Boston, Jay was the loving husband and friend of May Carol Leonard Long for 57 years. Jay was the adored son of Mary and Louis Long, beloved son-in-law of Helen and Lewis Leonard, loving brother of Rona Meizler of Newton (and her late husband Harold Meizler), Doris Berman and her husband Dr. Marvin Berman of Peabody the late Bertram and his wife Gloria Long of Brookline. Brother-in-law of Paul and Gloria Leonard of Braintree. Jay loved (and was deeply loved in return) by his children and their spouses. Richard Long and Elizabeth Charm, Clifford and Kym Long, Susan and Dr. Rodman Shale. “Papa Jay’s” loving, amazingly devoted grandchildren are Rebecca, Jacob, Jordan, Max, Micah,Jack, Lucas and Logan Long ,Sydney, Michael, and Benjamin Shale all of Newton. He was beloved by many nieces and nephews, cousins and dear friends.
In 1951, Jay was graduated from Suffolk University. While in college, Jay began his career working hard to make a success of his family’s furniture business. Later, he moved on to financing real estate development. He played a pivotal role in the development of Boston’s South End, helping people of diverse communities become property- owners. For the last sixty years, Jay’s business life was a model of entrepreneurship, integrity and inclusivity, always esteemed and beloved. Jay was a veteran of the Korean War. In 1963 he served as President of Zerrubabel Masonic Lodge. He will be remembered as an outstanding athlete. As a passionate golfer Jay made many friends on the golf course and everywhere he went. In 2011 Jay and May were honored for their ongoing support of Israel’s Economic Development through the purchase of Israel Bonds. Jason Long knew he was blessed; and he was a blessing to all who knew him. Services at Temple Emeth, 194 Grove St., Chestnut Hill on Sunday, July 6 at 2:00pm. Burial at Temple Emeth Memorial Park, 776 Baker St., West Roxbury. Following burial, memorial observance will be at the Shale residence until 9:00pm and continuing on Monday and Tuesday at his late residence from 2-4pm and 7-9pm.
