
Jean graduated from Spring Valley High School in New York and attended Hunter College and the New School for Social Research in New York City.
She worked as a legal secretary at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison in New York City during the 1950s and at other firms in New Jersey. Jean was later an Administrative Assistant at the American Cancer Society in New Jersey where she handled legacies and bequests.
Jean was an active member of Temple Emanu-El in Westfield, NJ, the League of Women Voters, and was a Girl Scout Troup Leader. She enjoyed the ballet, theater, art, reading The New York Times, traveling and spending time with family and friends.
Jean was married for 46 wonderful years to the love of her life, the late George William MacFail. She was the loving mother of Deborah MacFail of Brighton, MA and Alisa MacFail and husband, Stan Goldman of Reading, MA. Jean was the dear sister of Dr. Gerald Friedman of Scarsdale, NY. She was the adored grandmother of Jeremy, Jenna, Keri and Chad, and the aunt of ten nieces and nephews.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents Rose Shalan and Leo Friedman, and brothers Carlton Friedman of New Jersey and Philip Friedman of Utah.
A memorial service is being planned for next month in New Jersey.
