
Mr. Levy graduated from Bayonne High School and Rutgers University. He played clarinet in the Rutgers Band for four years and was student conductor of the band in his senior year.
He graduated from Rutgers University Law School. After passing the State of New Jersey Bar examination, he became associated with a law firm in Newark. Mr. Levy was manager and assistant manager of the William B. Willensky paint and wallpaper store on Avenue C in Bayonne for many years, where he worked closely with his brother-in-law, Ray Willensky. He served on the Board of Directors of the Bayonne Community Day Nursery, and was a member of Temple Emanu-el, the Zionist Organization of America, and the 33rd Street Club. He was secretary of the Temple Emanu-el Brotherhood for many years.
Mr. Levy played varsity tennis at both Bayonne High School and Rutgers. He won the Bayonne Times Junior Tennis Tournament in 1934 and, with George Shaw, the city doubles tournament in 1935. He was an avid golfer. His favorite sport for many years, however, was bowling, for which he won many American Bowling Congress trophies in local bowling leagues. He bowled three times weekly, even in his later years. In 2002, at the age of 87, he bowled a near-perfect 268.
He had many other hobbies. He was an avid reader. He enjoyed photography. He played violin, clarinet, and accordion. And he enjoyed his backyard flower and vegetable gardens.
Mr. Levy was married for 67 years to Bernice (Willensky), who passed away in 2007. He is survived by sons Barry Levy and his wife Nancy Levy and Ed Levy; grandchildren Laura Levy, Ben Levy and his wife Marie Knapp, Gillian Levy, and Kate Levy; and great grandson Elliott Daniel Knapp-Levy. He had two sisters, Edith Klugman and Lillian Silverman, who predeceased him. He was brother-in-law to Gertrude Willensky Sussman and uncle to Toby Stevens and her late husband Sam Stevens, Phyllis and Saul Lowitt, the late Elliot Willensky, Fred and Bonnie Willensky, and Steven and Judy Willensky.
Private graveside services were held in Wayland, Massachusetts, on January 10, 2012. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements under the direction of Levine Chapels, Brookline, MA.
